Air Filter Worn out?

Good day, this is my air-filter, it's been on the car since 2008 and done 7000+ miles.
Is this "wear" just cosmetic or should I be replacing it?

had it on there for 11 years... and I thought I was tight

I'd replace it - it looks tatty and will be full of crud at 11 years old.

I replace mine every 12 months.

You replace your 100 sausage filter every 12 months?

It's washable and can be recharged with a pipercross/foam filter kit. The filter is multi layer so the black bit is open cell and catches sparrows, bees, stones and stuff, the red bit does most of the filtering.

If the red bit is holed, it's functionally impaired, but otherwise, it's probably lacking more in not being recharged with fresh filter oil in 11 years than anything else. Out in the breeze like that, it's always going to be subject to damage, so it's your call.

If it's protecting a 15k race engine, a new filter's the recommended course of action. If it's on a stock zetec, it's perhaps less of a concern.

I'm not one for rash decisions to spend money, but I think I'd replace it.

yes I am a cheapskate, might just get some black spraypaint to cover up the red. This is locostbuilders after all.....

Seriously though, I will look into cost of new filter, but don't think it will become an annual thing, every 11 yrs will do for me.

Do you wash the filter? Probably a good idea if you haven't.
If you are serious about the red, don't spray it, you will block the filter. Permanent marker....
And maybe a shield to protect the leading edge?

OK if it's 100 and washable then wash it to rejuvenate it.

Replacing annually I was talking about 10-20 air filters in tin tops.

I have 3 of those, 2 have decomposed over the years, regular cleaning and re-oiling is the key to long life but if the surface starts to crumble it will affect a number of filtering factors as the black stuff turns to dust which is either ingested or blocks the red stuff.
Save 5 p per day for 5 years and replace

If you are paying 100 you buying from the wrong place

Should be 50-60 max

Indeed.

I researched the price after the fact. I was basing it on the price of my itg sausage filter. Still, it's the right order of magnitude compared to a paper filter for a tin top.
