insurance quotes are scary

Hi all. As stated im getting some scary insurance quotes on the tin top im only young but now 21 with 4years no claims im a bit miffed that im told i have to pay £1200 for my 04plate mondeo. when last year i was driving a freelander td4 which is a higher group insuance wise and only paying £1060 im confused by all the silly questions as im straight with it all as i have nothing to hide as i have the kit car to play with. So i ask who would people recommend for tin top insurance and before anyone says try adrian flux well i did today and best they could do way £2800.

I got a very good deal with privilege this year on the tintop. I'm guessing you've tried all the comparison sites? Have a play around with adding/removing named drivers such as spouse, parents, older sisters etc it can make a big difference and perfectly legal. Having my dad on my insurance used to give at least 10% discount up until he turned 60 a couple of years ago and it went up!!

I think they just pick a number out of thin air these days, especially where renewals are concerned.

Does the parent thing still work if youv moved out as bought a house last year and my other half has only a provisional so adding her jumps it up a little.

Insurance is so random! Im similiar age,NCB to you etc... and i did a quote a month before renewal and it somehow managed to jump up £200 last month at renewal time. No one would do it any cheaper.... However im paying around £700 on a 04 diesel 16v 1.9 Alfa 147, also 21.

Yep. Sister in law was on mine for a while for this reason. Does seem high, though 21 is still young to insurers. We are seeing a big change this year now the wife is 25.

Some times it does, some times it doesnt.

Also got a change, if not in price, but excluded item. when moving from 'mechanical engineer' to 'design engineer' its all so odd/clever/cobbled together that it appears random!

Wait until she passes and that will bump it up hugely....worth trying the comparison sites with her as a just passed driver to see who will be the cheapest in future (but by then goalposts will have changed again)
The parents thing should work, nothing ever says they have to live at the same address. just that they may use the car at some point (or not)

Fully comp is now cheaper than 3rd party. Goes on cars reputation as much as your own so large executive cars like merc's etc can be a lot cheaper than a fiesta, ignore the original banding when the car was new. I work with a guy who has 9 points on his licence for speeding, was quoted over £1000 for his little Peugeot so got a 3.2ltr merc coupe instead and is just over £300 fully comp, only prob is the £10 a day petrol cost

Insurance doesnt make sense, my missus is 34 we brought her a little 1.1 saxo and they wanted 400 quid more to insure her on that with a clean lisence and 5 years ncb than for both of us on a 03 mondeo wen i have 6 points and only 4 years ncb
it really doesnt make sense

adding my mum to my insurance has taken about 10% off mine for the last 11 years
but not sure how this will change with the EU rule changes about male/female drivers

adding any more experienced driver will normally help as long as they've got a job that fits into the low risk categories and have no claims or convictions

my GF had only been driving 3 years when I added her, she put the price up by £40
but adding a couple of my mates who've been driving almost as long as me didn't change the price at all (not even a penny)

I know that one all too well

to there way of thinking an 'engineer' could be someone on site all the time (with the car) - i reckon some insurers think a mechanical engineer is just a posh name for a car mechanic

but a design engineer sits in an office so therefore is rated the same as any other office worker that parks in a nice safe office car park...

it really doesnt make sense

think back about 10 years when saxo's were new...

the 1.1 saxo was being sold to 17/18 year olds with free insurance
add in that it was the chav/ned's car of choice for a long time
and what you get is a car model with a bad claims history = higher insurance costs

I paid a little more for my 1.0 106 (954cc 45bhp) than I did for my 1.1 fiesta the year before with less no claims bonus

once a car gets a bad claims history they never really seem to shake it off - but this means that rare models (often the fast ones) are sometimes the cheaper to insure

I got a quote last month for a 106 rallye - £350 fully comp - I pay £460 for a 1.8 focus at the moment !!
I reckon it just that the rare model that was general looked after doesn't have the same claims history when the look up the database (the chavs/neds made do with 1.1's, 1.4's or GTi's)

I've found your postcode has the most significant effect on insurance premiums, it's almost so bad that when I go looking for a new house it'll be 'location, location, car insurance quote'...

Agree with you there Slimy as I'm in the same postcode as you I think. I work for a major insurer, and they offer staff discount. They won't insure me however due to my postcode! Cheeky buggers. It's very pleasant where I live, however the shady council estate up the road with the shared postcode causes all my problems!

Try fiddling with the mileage as well. As strange as it sounds 15k miles was £20 cheaper than 10k miles a year!

There's more than one shady council estate by my reckoning...
