2007 MX5

Any MX5 experts on here? I have seen an MX5 for sale that has a current MOT with no advisory's but two years ago it had an advisory for " Offside rear wheel splayed more than normal". Presumably it has been sorted as it is not currently mentioned on the MOT. However what could likely cause that originally but not be an MOT failure? To me sounds serious.

The MX5 has adjustable suspension all round that uses alignment bolts and bushes.

The specialist who did my "fast road setup" used a pair of 17mm combination spanners that were about 450mm long as they are
burgers to undo and need to be tight when tightened.

Maybe these have been adjusted incorrectly, insufficiently tightened, wheel hit a pothole, or something else.

The MOT tester that did my MOT was going to insert a 3 foot crowbar into my bushes until I explained how they worked.

Personally I don't get carried away with advisories. Often its just the tester covering his bum. If its ok now why worry.

If the rear adjusters are the same as Mk1's they use a D bolt through the bushes with a cam adjuster secured by the corresponding D cut in the adjuster.
The open end of the D bolt faces forwards and inevitably crap, crud and salt work their way into the D.
That then seizes the adjuster bolt up meaning its difficult to achieve any further alignment, which could explain your advise.
Easy fix is to squirt penetrating oil down the D over a couple of weeks. Hard fix is either heat or cut between the arm and the bushes!.
5's are pretty critical on rear end set up so worth taking it to an MX5 specialist in your area.
Also just check if it's a Mk2 whether the front chassis rails above the roll bar mounts are solid. These rust from the inside out. It is an MOT testers "must do" examination but given he is only allowed to do so much it's worth having a good poke round, preferably from inside the wheelarch.
If they do need doing it's not too tricky a job for a Locoster with a Mig welder but often leads to them being written off as commercial repair can be costly.
Repair sections are available via the forums.
HTH.
Enjoy one of the best handling chassis going.
