Tin-tops :(

why does everything have to be so hard to fix/get at on modern tin-tops
who thought it was a good idea to make so much of the car out of plastic and why is it so many bolts shear on focus's ?



its taken me the best part of 2 days just to get my gearbox out
(ok a 10 year old focus is stretching the definition of modern a bit but still)

Stuck at work now, so putting it back together will have to be tonights job
I just hope I can remember how all the wirring goes back

Designed for easy assembly in the factory, not repair, combined with pressure from the main dealers to ensure the number of man hours to fix something is 'profitable'

The Zilbus (Eurovan I Citroen Synergie) is an engine out job to replace the heater plugs.
Then once the engine's out, there's no guarantee that the plugs will actually come out of the head without wrecking the ehad.

It's a good job that the thing will fire with preheating down to about minus 10 degrees c.

I agree - moden cars are a pain - I had quire a fre Citroen GSA's in the 80s and people used to complain about how hard they were to work on, but they are totally simple by modern standards.

If you had dropped the sub frame off it's wee easy to do

You think the Focus box is bad try changing the spark plugs on a v6 Espace! Engine out to get at the rear plugs.

actually the subframe didn't really get in the way, although it would have ment I wouldn't have needed to remove the rear mount - so its bolt wouldn't have sheared.....

dropping the box out was dead easy, getting to all the bits that needed to come off first wasn't so easy






the focus is the only 'modern' car I've ever owned and I'm getting fed up already


but I now know what my ideal car would be...
its a late 80's or early 90's hatch, completly rot free with carbs - any ideas ?
(if I could have re-shelled my old 106 I would have, it ticked all those boxes apart from the rust )

MK1, 2 VW Golf's don't tend to rust much, I think they injected wax. MK3's had galvanised panels.

Just remember that assembly in the plant is the reverse of what you've done. Transmission is mounted on the subframe off line then pushed up from underneath.. takes the guys about 20 seconds to do.

Now the 106 is an excellent car .... Easy to work on and never gave grief .
Perhaps you should change to golf easy to fix pre mk4 and loads of spares

well by the time you got it it was 90% new
unfortunatly the rusty chassis isn't so easy to fix


btw the back brakes on my focus are almost as bad as the 106 - I have to adjust the things every 5k or they don't work properly and the car gets all squirmy under breaking

You think it was hard work up the front end, JUST wait until you find that you need to replace one of the rear suspension arms.

I'm hoping they'll last till I'm shot of it....

but if they don't I've been told to get all new bolts before trying
