Lifting a bike engine - any tips?

Lifting the R1 engine out my Fury tomorrow...

It was a good many years ago that I lifted it in, and back then I had the luxury of a lot more space, plus the chance to check the lift before hovering it over the car.

Any tips on how best to sling it up? It's coming out with the engine mounts still attached. I've got a pair of round slings, plus various ratchet straps. Using a pulley to lift it straight up, then rolling the car backwards out the way once it's in the air.

I lifted mine in and out by hand using the top cradle.
Lift it onto top chassis rail and have breather, then onto floor or into bay

I usually lift mine with a sling between the 2 mounts at either end of the head. I do it with an engine crane but hoist up and roll the car should be good especially if you're tight for space. Usually too far to reach with the side pods to manhandle it out.

ps. intended but forgot to say on the other thread "don't just leave it" after I saw Tims blow in friont of me at Aintree.

I'm not meant to lift over 25kg for medical reasons, but the R1 lump is only about 58kg,what do they know.............

58/2 = 29kg

If you've a mate to help you lift it out then it might be OK.

Just make sure you've got space to put it down next to the car so the pair of you aren't holding it up for too long.

Alternatively, anybody local to you with an engine crane?

Thanks for the replies.

In the end I used a cheap pulley from Amazon (rated to lift 185kg) attached to a joist on the garage roof. The slings I bought were too short to lift as you described Adi, so I used a couple of ratchet straps instead...quite useful, since you can adjust their length to balance the lift as needed. A bit of a bodged set up, then, but it worked fine and cost less than 20 quid in parts.

Always a bonus when you get the job done with minimal cash outlay in my view as well.
