Struggling to get durite water temp sensor to work

Sensor plugged into the thermostat. Earthed correctly, and connected to ignition +ve.
Any thoughts on what I should check please?

Don't sensors work on earth? live to gauge, earth from gauge to sensor and then earth?

You havn't used ptfe tape on the sensor by any chance?

It's the "and connected to ignition +ve. " that rings alarm bells

Sorry for the slow reply. Yes, I used ptfe tape.
Ended up running direct to battery, and it works. However, reading very hot even when idling in the garage. Track day was reading very, very hot but I will cover that in another thread!

Istr that the sensor is just a variable resistor that changes with temp. normally with just one connection, the feed to the instrument and then earthed through the sensor body and engine block so you should not use ptfe tape or anything to seal the thread as this will reduce the earth connection.

Are we talking about a sensor for the temperature gauge or a fan switch?

In which case the circuit should go something like.

Ignition live to gauge, gauge to sensor, sensor to ground.

There is not normally any direct live (+12v) to the sensor.

How many pins on the sensor? Have you got a link or picture showing the gauge and or sensor?
