Propshaft Bolts & Nuts

After a spanner check after brands hatch, i notice the prop nuts and bolts onto the engine spocket adaptor have all move and slackened off ( but not fallen off )

Ive marked every nut and bolt with tipex so i can see if anything had moved.....which turned out handy.

Whats the best Threadloc grade to use on them.

There 4x allen head bolts with nyloc nuts at the mo......

I would drill & lockwire them if you want to be sure...........

That is the second suggestion of lockwire of prop bolts, but what pattern would you use?

I find lockwiring difficult with only two bolts, let alone the number on a prop... got a photo?

i already have lock nuts on it, thats what came loose


I know there is blue and red thread loc, but dont know what is the stronger one, isn't there a number according to the strength

What thread pitch are you using on the bolts?

A finer pitch and a slightly higher torque would perhaps be better?

All of mine are 5/16 UNF with those tall nylock jobies for extra friction

We use a Quaife reverse where the allen bolts are threaded into the Quaife flange, so no nuts can be used. We had the same thing: Bolts becoming use although we applied blue Loctite. Now we changed to red Loctite, and it is fine. But we check regularly, and the hex headed bolts + lockwires are already at hand.
I would suggest you use red Loctite and also use lockwires if you can...

Studlock is the badgers nadgers. Just make sure you never want to take the prop off again....

Hi

You may find that the allen bolts do not have a very large head. This results in a smaller surface area of contact. Adding washers under the head IS NOT an option. But try replacing with bolts that have a large head diameter to give better surface area contact.

Very good point well made Matt - so you are basically saying you cant beat having a large head pulled up tight against a flange.
This is perhaps one of those areas where sticking to the OE solution can be a good idea. And of course adding the check to the regular checklist.
