drum brake assembly

I've got escort mk1 rear drums, but am not sure i've assembled them correctly as the right shoe (on the picture) doesn't touch all 3 flat spots (the ones where the dimples should rest on)

So has the previous owner swapped/mixed left hand and right hand shoes?

I know that on mk2 brakes the liners are so that one liner is close to the slave cylinder and the other close to the pivot point, here's they're both close to the pivot point

I know it's missing a spring, haven't put that one on yet

in yout picture the right hand shoe is not fitted correctly. The shoes have a leading edge. look at the position of the friction material on the steel shoe. The material covers almost all the metal at one end, and a lot less at the other. The left shoe shown is correct, the right shoe needs flipping over ? so that as the drum is turning it sees the same amount of metal showing beneath the lining at the beginning of each shoe.

They both have the letter 'R' on them. Is that significant?

Also a spring is missing at the wheel cylinder end.

As i thought then. Previous owner mixed the shoes then. My trigger was that the right shoe doesnt sit on the dimples in the backplate wich didn't look right.

That's what i put on when i removed them, so they were on like this, but I thought like "ginger ninja" that it was incorrectly. So they should be on just like on the mk2 (with auto handbrake adjuster)
