i'm 99% certain but just in case....
went to fit some free to me rear sierra drums but wouldn't fit - think the previous owner may have set calliper/hubs up for discs to the rear?
from reading online the hubs would have to have been turned down and they are around 135mm - which would indicate they have been turned down
a few pics below - can someone confirm? - i've given the forum search a go but i'm sure someone will be able to put me out of my misery!
i can then go shopping for a disc kit!

Thats a drum hub carrier. Sierra disc brake hubs have a extra flange and 2 bolt holes for the caliper.

i think i was slightly bemused when offering up the backplate as it sets to an angle rather than having the cylinder orientated at 12 o'clock if

Yes they are 90 degrees to standard fit.
Looks to me like a disc brake upright and hub brake hub.
Below is the hub brake upright from my MK Indy a few years back - note the 10mm thick plate on the outer face that fills the open bolt space in your
images.

They need rotating 90 degrees the cylinder should be at the top. Those mounting holes are for when running a disc setup which you will either need adapters for or different hub carriers.
