The car I am building for 250 quid (or so....)
Hi peeps. Finally managed to borrow a (crappy) digi camera yesterday, and now I have some photos to for you all to look/laugh/cry at in the gallery.
Spec so far includes:
Self built chassis, wishbones etc,
Vauxhall 2 litre 16v motor,
Type 9 gearbox,
4x4 LSD,
2.2 L to L quickrack,
Modified Dax Dedion rear axle,
Lolocost front cycle wings,
Modified Lolocost nosecone,
S/H Dax rear arches modified to fit,
Modified Metro!!! pedal box for floor mount and bias bar brakes,
Modified Cortina rad (will change to Polo once on road)
Aluminium floor, and outer panelling,
Richfield low back seats.
Other manufacturers parts include:
Peugeot M/C reservoir caps (blue to match fiberglass  )
Volvo 340 rad fan,
Leyland Daf 400/Sierra hybrid clutch cable,
Vauxhall Nova/Sierra hybrid handbrake cables,
Mk5 Escort handbrake,
Volvo 7 series coolant expansion tank,
Westfield shallow sump,
Westfield exhaust manifold and silencer (yet to fit),
Westfield steering wheel,
Sierra column (suprise suprise)
Cortina front brakes,
Sierra disc rear brakes,
S/H 7x15"Compomotive alloys,
Vauxhall Astra GTE digital dash.
Still quite a bit to do on it, but at least it looks like a car now

mmmm - dax arches
Very nice Stu. I too have been seduced by the curvacious works of art that are Dax arches, and will be using them on my beast. After browsing your
photos, I just have a few Q's...
1. Is your chassis standard width (42")?
2. Is your Sierra axle standard width or have you shortened driveshafts?
3. What size are your wheels and tyres?
4. Did you start with the wide Dax arches or the narr...less wide Dax arches? Was it much bother cutting them to fit a parallel sided car? Did you
glass in new mounting flanges or use brackets or something?
5. I notice they fit flush with the bottom of your chassis and are level with the top too. Is your chassis 'book' height at the back or did you
make it the same height as the arches? Is your scuttle higher than standard?
6. Where did you get second hand arches from? What did you pay? Can you get me some  .

Thanx for the positive comments chaps.
The chassis is 4" wider than 'book' and three inches shorter in the cabin area (I've got ickle legs!!!). The nose of the chassis however is
standard size, front wishbones two inches longer either side.
The Dax supplied axle utilises standard Sierra hubs and driveshafts (I originally tried adapting a Volvo 340 dedion, and nearly succeeded...).
The wheels are 15x7 Compomotives, with 205/50/15 tyres on. The rears look a tad lost in the arches, but they will do for now.
The Dax arches were the wide(est) buggers. And yes, it was a real poo to cut them to fit the car, but IMO well worth it. Basically I ran a piece of
masking tape around the arch for the proposed line I needed for the new flange. Unfortunately it has to be guesswork, as their isnt a parellel side to
work to. The old lip was cut off (a few cans of Stella helps for guts) and the inside of the arch 'roughed up' and the gel coat on the outside cut
back. I then layed the arch on a flat piece of thermoplastic, and basically moulded a new flange off that, allowing a generous overlap onto the
existing arch. Plenty of rubbing, filling etc et voila! One arch! Then you do the other side, which then is even harder, as it has to match the first
arch. And the fact that in detail, the original moulds for either side are ever-so-slightly different, but not as bad as some I've seen.
The chassis is book height at the back, it was more luck than judgement that they fitted like that.
And yes, the scuttle is higher than standard, by approx two inches. Just to give a bit more clearence for the engine (and any future
upgrades:cool
Finally, I bought the arches S/H from the Robin Hood brigade at Stoneleigh two years ago. I noticed them amongst some other stuff in the morning, when
we walked past a bit later on they were still there. Thinking to myself that it was probably because the bloke wanted silly money for them, I enquired
how much. After a bit of haggling, we agreed a price. (this is the bit where you will probably cry...)
30 quid.

Hi Stu,
I've done a wider chassis too (though not quite 4 inches). I was wondering what you're doing about the windscreen?

Not bothering mate. Will make a fiberglass aeroscreen eventually, but first priority is finishing, as I have crash helmet and wrap around
sunglasses!

Windscreen
Mines +4 and I bent up a frame as in the book and got the glass from a plant glazing place, make sure it's the proper stuff (laminated windscreen
glass) and kite marked.

Iv got that picture on a poster that came free with FHM I think it was! However i enjoyed looking at the otherside more! I dont care if he isnt a bad
looking specimen I choose Kelly Brook every time!
