Technical help please

Reaching out to the collective here.

I am planing a new dune buggy type project but struggling to get my head around the running gear and drive train. Basic brief is I would like a v6 engine 4wd with the engine being the rearmost component.
My first thought was Granada Cosworth engine with Sierra 4x4 sump and gearbox turned 180deg and the diffs but this is where I get lost which way willthediffs then spin and could I reverse them if needed failing that has anyone any other options
Thanks

Unless you turned the original diffs over, or used diffs that have the pinion on the correct side in your proposed set up you will have a lot of reverse gears. It is not quite as simple as turning a diff over as hypoid gears will not like running "backwards".

It should be easy enough to find a transaxle from a porsche 964 or similar then it's easy(ish). You would just need to find an appropriate front diff and make an adaptor plate for your engine of choice. Is the cosworth v6 not a bit of an old clunker compared to a modern unit like a Mazda?

I agree regarding the boat anchor engine choice but I wanted the idea of the driveline under the sump and it’s all I could think of with that arrangement

Looks like there have been a number of 4wd porsche//gertrag setups since the 964. What about this....

Problem with that style is where the engine would sit in relation to the axle line. I would like to try keep the weight over the axle
The othe alternative is useing an Audi A4 box and going mid engine but this looses the 4wd

Just trying to get my head around using a front diff on the rear and vide versa to get the drive in the correct direction, not sure if it would work but might be worth considering?
