oily crossflow, Grrrr
I spent all day Sunday chasing the oil leaks that have plagued my crossflow engine since I aquired my STM.
New rocker cover gasket,,,,,,OK,
New fuel pump plate gasket,,,,,,,,,Ok,
New sump gasket and rubber seals,,,,,,,,, leaks as bad as ever.Grrrrrrrrrrrr
Question ,How the hell do you get the front rubber seal to seal.

My xflow leeks as well, so i bought a large seed tray and that lives under the engine while in the garage
i also have never found out were the oil is coming from

I have a Crossflow that leaks a bit too. Cardboard on the garage floor soaks it up.
Leaky Crossflow = fact of life

would it help if i told you lot that i've never had a drop of oil from my xflow!!!!
come to think of it, wonder if there's any oil in there.....

I would be worried if there was no leaks it would meen there is no oil in the engine.

So that's what I can look forward to! Mine has been running, but only to move the car in/out of lock-up, plus - having to scrape sump
over the centrally-placed padlock hasp (Ouch!!).
No oily leaks - so far!! (At least, not from the engine).
Work-in-Progress: Changed to Zetec + T9. Still trying!!

Sorry to buck the trend but my xflow is almost oil tight. I used a competition sump gasket set from Burtons which I reused when I rebuilt the engine
and have a decent ally rocker cover which uses bolts about 4" long that seems to OK even with a cork gasket. If the rocker cover leaks I may try
some decent instant gasket . I do have a very slight seepage from the oil pump . The crankcase breather system was taken off and it uses a take off
from Burtuns and an oil catch tank with a breather filter mounted about the same hieght as the rocker cover.Use a bit of decent instant gasket on the
sump seals front and rear , it helps if the engine is out of the car and upside down when fitting the sump . You have tested the sump for leaks ??

Has the sump been modified and/or who modifed the sump?
Did they use an engine block to keep it square or/and did they unbolt it before everything was seemed welded?
Just a thought...

Ran x-flows and pre x-flows for many years, some leaked a little oil but with careful building they were oil tight. As AndyGT says was the sump
modified and was it kept square, seen some right disasters. The Burton "competition" sump gasket is better than the old cork one providing
your sump is in tip top condition. Its main advantage is the simple fact it does not squeeze out when you tighten the bolts and the solid construction
means the bolts can be tightened better. If your sump is not perfect forget it, you need the squeezability of the cork one. Using an alloy rocker
cover with the Burton card gasket keeps top end leaks to a minimum, the cork gasket works OK with the standard rocker cover but tends to squeeze out
over time when used with an alloy one. Burton sell improved form and rear oil seals now but never had a problem with the standard ones.
Don't go mad with gasket sealant, it can easily block the sump strainer and its goodbye oil pressure.

Hi fellas, thanks for the replies.
Having now run the engine for a while the only leak appears to be from the front of the engine around the rubber seal that is pressed into position by
the sump.
all other weeps and leaks seem to be now oil tight.
I will run it as is for this season and see how it goes.
