Karts

My 14 year old grandson and some mates want to build a kart. They've got a big yard behind one of the Dad's unit, so it will be used on a rough surface. They're all pretty clueless so I guess I'll be involved.
Any info would be appreciated, especially how to do it on the very cheap.

Motorised?

If so an old go-kart with engine might be a start. Get them each to pitch in a bit of money and make sure they wear suitable helmets.

Failing that maybe there are plans out there for fabricating something from box section steel ERW. Although wheels, shocks, steering rack etc probably won't be cheap.

I'd look for something used as a start point even if it needs some tinkering to get it running right.

What about something along the lines of the offroad buggy that Ron Champion also published?

karts need to run in a very smooth surface, so a buggy would be more practical

Thanks Guys
Very useful stuff. I suppose the Ron Champion one is out by the same factor as the £250 car, so at least 10 to 1!

Personally, I think your bonkers for even thinking about letting some 14yr olds hoon around a dirt track, in whatever
As I know what I was like at 14!!

I bet within minutes someone will get hurt, and possibly seriously
Noise, and someone will complain, and the police will be involved,

Every single square inch of the UK is owned either privately or by the Queen, so any spare ground is not actually spare

I have four Grandchildren, 19, 9, and twins 5, and I wouldn't even consider doing anything like the OP's post

There is to much to go wrong, out weighing what might not

Just my opinion, and may seem negative, but I love my kids, and grandkids even more !!

I couldn't live with the consequence, if something was to go wrong with something that I was a party too,

as said, just my opinion

steve

Thats was probably spelt wrong, or had some grammer, that the "grammer police have to have a moan at
