Is the length if immersion heater listed as per height of tank, so in reality they are shorter?
I measured tank to be 36 in high.
Heater i am looking at, one wire from the thermostat to heater element looks burnt plus coppet connector looks corroded, when powered the 13 a fuse
blows.
Does it sound like it is fixable?
Sounds like the heater is "down to earth......not repairable.
not sure, about the element length, think you're right,
36"element, for, a 36"tank
Check heater with a meter for resistance to earth first, in my experience the thermostat burns out and causes the fault.
The stat just pulls out, easy fix.
Thx for replies.
If it is thermostat, then since the heater and thermostat are one unit, the wholer lot needs replacing?
The brand is AEI, probably >20 yrs old.
Pricewise the thermst+htr is about five pounds more than just the thermostat.
.... one more q. I can see 27 and 36 in heaters both rated at 3 kw - any reason why the shorter 27 in cannot br used in a 36 in tank?

thermostat is separate and just pulls out.
Hmm googling indicates 27 in is correct size so a trip to wickes it is.... who sell the spanner at the lowest price.
Top entry immersion heater for a 36" cylinder is 27"
if you had side entry immersion heater, 11" or 14" immersion heater would be required
yes as above top entry are 27 inch side entry are generally 11 inch on domestic systems

The last immersion heater I took out refused to budge and the proper spanners just bent. In the end I had to take out the whole cylinder put the
heater nut in a mechanics vice and turn the cylinder to loosen the nut. Be careful doing this cos easy to bend the cylinder and they're
expensive to replace.
..... wellas half expected the heater nut wont budge.
Taking the tank out in not convenient. Is it possible to drill into the brass nut and hacksaw it out.
