What would you do??
Antnicuk - 20/11/15 at 08:12 PM

I have just got back into Kit cars with a very well put together Tiger Avon. It has a 2.l silver top Zetec with the following

Twin 45 DCOE's, with the correct 5th bleed hole for the Zetec engine,
Pipercross PX600 Foam filter
ARP Boltset,
Tiger ERA Sump,
Remote Filter + Oil Cooler,
Webcon ECU, with 6200 rev limit,

It has been dynoed at 175 bhp.

I want to have more power, somewhere in the region of 260 to 300. (i know, probably too much but i am greedy)

I am considering my options for getting to this sort of power level, needless to say, Locost is key. Do i just turbo the engine i have? if so, what sort of power can i expect without needing to rebuild, lower compression etc while maintain reliability on track days. Does anyone know if the Webcon ECU will also run an injection system (i wouldnt turbo the carbs)

One issue that concerns me is that the rev limit is set at 6200 rpm, this seems very low for a fairly modern engine, my 16v astra in 1990 had a 7k rpm limit?? Is this conservative or is it about right, i dont want a very small power curve and a 7k red line would make a big difference with a sensible sized turbo. I had a VX220 Turbo before and it had a very small power band, it would run out of puff well before 6k rpm and took a lot of fun out it.

Or

do sell the whole lot and get something else, Honda S2000 complete set up? Focus ST turbo set up or go back to rotary? Will the first 2 fit?

I can fabricate whats need to fit a turbo, ie exhaust, intercooler, HP fueling etc, im not too hot with ECU mapping or rebuilding engines.

Any thoughts or ideas other than "you dont need that much power" are welcome

175 bhp is resaonable for that set up.

The 6200 rpm ECU is the set up for the standard class is what was the Tiger Race Series.

The ECU can be re set by a WEBCON dealer.

ST170 is a good cheap option

S200 will certainly fit.

thanks for that, i was thinking more about the ST 2.5 turbo set up, rather than the 170.

Remember that if you uprate the engine by 60% then you will need an uprated gearbox (quaife type 9 straight cut are rated at 250hp) and possibly an lsd and then bigger brakes and wider tyres/wheels, welcome to the upgrade spiral.

200sx s14 engine would be a budget replacement and comes with a free rwd gearbox (aisin az6).

Antnicuk - 20/11/15 at 09:11 PM

i had considered that but they are getting quite rare now. Tiger run the Type 9 with 270bhp with no problems so i was considering turboing the existing engine and sorting the box when it dies.

I have been on the modification roller coaster for the past 25 years, i was hoping i was going to grow out of it but alas, it never happened.

If i was to change the engine to the Focus or a duratect turbo i would probably replace the gearbox at the same time

INDY BIRD - 20/11/15 at 09:16 PM

what about ford sierra cosworth turbo?

I know of a couple of engines a friend is selling and will be around 300 bhp?

Antnicuk - 20/11/15 at 09:19 PM

id love a cosworth but they seem to be fetching exceptional money recently, especially with a cossie gearbox, they are quite heavy too, but that isnt the reason i woudnt have one.

INDY BIRD - 20/11/15 at 09:20 PM

I can find out what he wants for them if you like?,

i know they was rebuilt etc, and he has a couple of different turbo options,

cheap BHP

Antnicuk - 20/11/15 at 09:26 PM

oh go on then, antnicuk@msn.com if its easier. its not shepherd motors is it?

INDY BIRD - 20/11/15 at 09:33 PM

No it's not,

It's just a friend, who is a good mechanic, etc,

And has a passion for cossies, he has a couple of cars and a rally escort cosssie, and some spare engines he has completed etc,

I'll ask and email you etc

Thanks

i suppose the next question would be what would my complete set be worth, engine, box and ecu. Only done 2k miles and is tuned very well, really smooth for carbs.

Might be worth a u2u with jeffw on the merits of the rotrex supercharger, he has squeezed 400hp out of his zetec.

Raw do a bolt on kit http://www.striker-cars.co.uk/supercharged-zetec-engine-package/

Less to re-engineer with a supercharger and may be more drivable than a turbo.

mark chandler - 21/11/15 at 08:54 AM

Good shout following Jeff's example, the figures speak for themselves.

I have a turbo and supercharged cars, the turbo is manic to drive the charger wins hands down when you need to be fast.

INDY BIRD - 21/11/15 at 02:38 PM

u2u sent on cossie engine

coozer - 21/11/15 at 02:41 PM

I'm building a turbo blacktop zetec up to focus rs spec, higher actually with forged pistons and h beam rods. I'm looking for 350 bhp.

If your looking at the 2.5 five pot rs then you'll need to find a gearbox solution as the bell housing pattern is different to the zetec/st motor.

Adamirish - 21/11/15 at 05:33 PM

If you decide to sell your zetec setup then send me a u2u with a price, I may be interested!
