aaaaaargh - oil leak!

How frustrating! Im almost ready for IVA a few minor jobs left and i find an oil leak! Typically it's not from an undertightened oil filter or something like that - it's the damn gearbox input shaft seal! Couldn't rally be worse!


Please tell me your frustrating stories like this ti make me feel better!

My gear box output seal blew during iva test. Whilst the tester did the sound test and lights, I was mopping his workshop floor.....

First thing was the diff, driveshafts and rear suspension. Built the front suspension and dropped it on the floor, put the engine and gearbox in, wired and plumbed it all up, induction on, exhaust on, first start. All in the first 3 weeks.

Then jumped in for the first drive to find I'd forgot the prop! And due to the nature of the chassis the motor and box had to come out to get it in!! Bummer.

Parked car on drive ready to set off for SVA (it was many years ago), only for a thunderstorm and torrential rain to attempt to fill it up. Dried off as much as possible, got 2 miles (onto the upslope of the M60 Barton high-level bridge) only for the mechanical fuel pump to give up. Had to call for help and get towed home, by someone who had never towed before and with an inadequate rope that snapped twice.

Fitted electric fuel pump and got to test centre no problem 3 weeks later. Only failed on two very minor points - had to raise the mirrors a couple of inches and place extra cushioning on top of the fuel tank straps.

Just remembered. One o-clock in the morning before the first SVA attempt, I suddenly remembered that I hadn't put the oil in the gearbox and I was setting off at half-past seven. Luckily I had actually already bought the oil.

I caught meningitis just before my second SVA retest (long time ago). Fortunately a mate took the Fury and it passed!

I had exactly the same but it was the bell housing to box gasket... I used the paper gasket but make a stupid mistake and didn't use hylomar. I went with the leak to Iva and just wiped off the box before the test... I then passed and promptly took the box and engine out to fix it... Seems dry now...

Frustrating I know but I bet there are other jobs you want to do but would not chose to take the box out now given the choice...

Not IVA or SVA related (not been invented when I built my 2 Caterhams) but upgrade related.

After years of using an Escort Type 2 box I decided that with 175 bhp and running on slicks it was time to fit a better box and sell the type 2 before I destroyed it.

So bought a Type E from a scrappy and a Quaiffe Pro kit from Quaiffe themselves which was built up with the help of a mechanic mate who had built the Type 2 many years previously (never had any issues) and had years of experience building boxes. I bought a rebuild kit which included all the bearings, syncros and gaskets and away we went.

With a RS2000 alloy belhousing added, a new clutch plate, a new prop and a modified cross member all went well and the car was finished. It engaged gears fine on the bench and when the car was stationary but once on the move it would not engage 2nd gear either from 1st or 3rd so it was out with the box and strip it. Everything looked OK with no signs of what was happening so as a precaution we got another set of syncros and put it back together and refitted it, still exactly the same. So out it came again and in went the original donor syncros (which looked pretty new with no obvious wear) and guess what, still the same.

Mate admitted defeat and suggested I rang Quaiffe who suggested I take them the box which they could hopefully sort while I waited. This was a 200 mile each way trip and when I got there they said that I would have to leave it since they were too busy to look at it while I was there, great. Left them the 2 sets of new syncros so they could fit exactly what they wanted.

After about a week got a phone call saying the box was sorted and was presented with a huge bill. They said the bearings were worn out as were the syncros and the tailhousing was bent. Could not dispute the third item but the bearings were new and the fitted syncros were fine plus I had left 2 sets of new ones on the bench like I said above. After some discussion they removed the cost of bearings and syncros and put 2 new sets of syncros in the packing to replace the 2 sets they had "lost".

Box came back and looked fine so set about refitting it. Hired hoist and lifted it ready to install, on the last pump the weld that held the handle pivot snapped meaning the only way from there was down. Took the decision that if I was super careful (plus with the recent experience of removing engine and box I was getting pretty good) I could get it in first time which I did, huge relief.

All that was left to do was bolt the rear mount (which was already bolted to the cross member) to the rear of the box and guess what, no threads. Needed a helicoil which would mean taking the engine and box out YET again. But with the hoist buggered so was I. Found a hire shop open at 3.00 pm Saturday but he was reluctant to hire one out so late since they normally went strait to Sunday markets. Took loads of identification and he let me have one. Engine and box out and I realised there was actually space to get a nut above the bot hole in the tail housing so instead of helicoiling the buggered thread I did that. Engine and box back in but bolting the mount to the cross member was a right sod with the gearbox in the way.

Next day tried the car, all was fine and never had another issue with it. Friend of a friend still has the box in his 250 bhp VX track day car and in the 15 years since he fitted it its only had one check over. It still uses my nut and bolt to hold on the rear mount.

sure you have not covered a vent hole or something with paint etc and the gearbox can't breathe? They need to be ventilated like axles and engines etc so when they get hot the air pressure inside does not force oil past the lip seals.

Thanks - always much better when you realise you're not alone! I'm not entirely sure it's not the bellhousing/box seal - either way it's engine and box out!

The funny thing is if it was my daily I wouldn't be bothered - I'd just do it one morning but it's more frustrating on the kit for some reason!
