Zetec Engine And ECU Clarification

Hi Guys,

Looking at Ford wiring diagrams, I am getting confused with their names for engines and what we know them as.

I am using the LAAN and not sure which name of engine / diagram I should be looking at.

What do ford call their engines?

Zetec Silver Top:

"DOHC 16V" On CAM Cover = "Zetec"
"ZETEC 16v" On CAM Cover = "Zetec-E"

Zetec Blacktop:

On Standard Car = "ZETEC-R"
RS and ST170 - "Duratec"

Is that correct and which is the LAAN used on?

Many, many thanks,

I can't help specifically, but this website has a lot of useful info on the Zetec engine: http://toyne.org.uk/zetec-engine.html

Your ecu is from either a late Ford Mondeo or a Cougar fitted with a 2.0 Ford Zetec black top.

I can't tell if it's from an auto or a manual transmission car.
Do you know ?

If it's an auto your on your own. A manual, then all the info you need is on here in the injection section and the wiring will 99% be the sme as the Owl5 code that I've put up.

Don't try and look for complete diagrams, it's like looking at spaghetti.

Hi Ya,

From all my searching, its a manual.
I wired it up today in the kitchen and can get the LED to change from flashing to solid on and then off so looks like the imobalizer side is correct.
It does seem, from all my searches that your diagram is the one.
Only couple of things I am issing information on:

Rev counter wire in Pin48, is it a pulse positive or negative?
Alternator monitor Pin 59, needed?
Is a knock sensor required?
Fule pressure sensor required?

Many thanks all!

Cheers!

Depends what alternator your using

No knock sensor on the zetec ( St170 )

No fuel pressure sensor on a zetec ( St170 )

Pretty sure if it's a pre 2000 it will be single o2.

There are multi load switches. Most can be binned. Clutch I can't remember if it's normally open or normally closed. Have a read of the posts there is lots of info in there that should answer all your questions. Like I say 99%+ will be the same as the owl5 pin outs.

I will be giving my self a refresher this weekend as I've got three looms to build.

My last ever zetec looms.

Mk2 Mondeo only went to 2000 then the mk3 took over with the Duratec.

Base model Focus went to 2004 with a Zetec but it had the 60 pin ecu. St170 and Focus Rs had the 104 pin due to needing the extra channels.

Mk3 Mondeo with Duratec would be 2001 to 2007

So should be a 200 or older blacktop Zetec then by the looks of it.
Hence no need for Knock sensors etc.
Pitty there isnt a good schematic as some show Knocks, some dont, some show you need to CAT sensors, post and pre.

Have you not got the loom ? You could just cross reference it to the pin out list.

Wish I did. I bought the ECU with the connector and cables from here but wouldnt know if the loom was the original etc.
I guess one way to tell will be when the engine runs for the first time if errors exist looking for the second CAT sensor etc.
