Head advice

Need some advice guys on where to get my cylinder head, I'm looking for a tuned head but don't wish to pay burton prices.

Does anyone have any experience of Euro Engine Power Units based in Essex, They sell exchange stage three heads for £180+vat using 1.625" inlet & 1.34" exhaust valves.

Or is it best just to go to Speed shack and buy second hand?

Your best bet is definatley Motorsport news classifieds, just look through all the adds in the back, i got a group one pinto head with waisted valves and a group one cam for £150 good for 170break on 40's...

various states of tune are not just a simple case valves,seats and flowing. there are other considerations as well. Has your bottom end been reworked to take the higher tune. Which cam will you be using, will you use a vernier timing set-up to "dail the cam in".

You need to trawl all the tuners you can or might use. Ask them questions like what spec, what would expected performance increase be, have they gas benched measured any of their work, have they dyno run any of their work and what were the results, maybe also do they have any details of people that they have supplied that could be checked.
after that it is to a degree pay your mony & take your choice.

Probably the cheapest & best £/bhp could be gained simply by a good cam and a vernier timing wheel, followed by a dyno sesion.

Have too agree with the big green fellow..........maybe tidy the head up yourself, remove any casting flash's, radius any sharp corners, DO NOT polish the ports and don't buy one you can comb your hair in, but the one most people miss is the dyno.........best bhp/£ ever spent, iv'e seen incredible increase's in engines i thought where running fine when set up by people who know what there doing,

perfect example, YB atmo cosworth built by myself, (can't afford wilcox price's) sound'ed fine, thought it pulled like a train, put it on rollers, 2 hours later after some jetting, cam timing ect.... a full 45bhp up, sounding a lot sicker on tickover mind you.........best £70 ever spent.
And if you want another example i have dyno sheets for my current blade motor, B4 and after plots.......17bhp up after a good fettle...........ok, most of the gain came from fitting the right can for the engine, but without the rollers how would we have known which one was doing the bizzz ????

Moral.............

whatever you do get it on the rollers.

70 quid for two hours on the rollers Jon? Even in your old grassing days that was cheap. Bet it wasn't at Nobles!

don't let em know on here i live within 200yds of one of the few "caterham super 7" centers in the uk ?????

good fun prowling street n blowing the buggers off though.........te heeee

£70 expensive ??? simple maffs tells me £35/hour, can still get a more than decent job for that just down road... but yeah, your rite not nobles....

he's not too bad for CEC bits though, as some tastey stuff in, don't know if you was aware but he as a much bigger place now, i wander in from time to time to see wot he's up too, allways some "supercar" trying to drive out rollers..........

Cheers for the advice gent's, will have to look through the motorsport ad's

The engine so far is,
1700cc using +0.090"(2.28mm) overbore
uprated bearings(vandervell)
ARP bolts through out the bottom end
kent BCF2 cam
twin40 dellortos
possibly lolocost manifold and can.

Will definately be going to the rollers, a friend was happy to let the crypton tune man set up his car, went well until the cold weather arrived then started popping and farting like a good un.

Scutter, there's a place in Andover with rolling road. Avoid it, hopelessly inaccurate. I went there first, told 190bhp, at better RR in Oxfordshire (Owen Developments), same car produced 150

Dan,

Your engine spec is pretty damn near identical to mine . except for the overbore dims. Same block, Same Carbs same cam same bearings.

I thought I'd build this engine as a keeper, as I also have a thing for Mk1 Escorts.

I reckoned I might well have it long enough and drive it hard enough to eventually need a rebuild and at 1700 (1690?) you got nowhere left to go with the block.

I went for a Vulcan engineering head, I know its pricey gear but they do have a very knowledgable and helpful guy, Steve, in charge now and the quality is top notch.

I'm just starting to think about firing her up for the first time - she's in situ, just resting
