Have I killed it? *UPDATE - Yes, very probably -
Hi,
Yesterday evening my type 9 gearbox started making a fairly hefty grinding noise in fith, but only at full throttle between 2000 and 2500 RPM. Got
home and checked all the chassis panelling for tightness but found nothing. Anyone got a clue what's going on?
TBH, i'm quite surprised it lasted as long as it did; it's a 20 quid box that I lopped in 5 years ago ;-)

If its the clutch it should do it in all gears; it's only in fifth that the problem becomes obvious.
Jossey, what do you mean with planet gears?
I'll do some more checks, but it looks like engine-out time :-(

Dunno... As said, it was fitted 5 years ago and filled. There isn't any oil on the garage floor, but I'll check (and maybe refill)
anyway

If it's grinding it'll be too late to put oil in it. Bearings are shot probably. Not worth mucking around servicing it - just bung a new
box in.
Maybe worth checking the prop - they can do funny things just before they expire.

Well, I went for another short drive today to see if the box was also noisy from cold. Turns out it is. Took the shortest route home and took the lid
off the box and did some simple checks:
1) Oil level is OK
2) Had a rummage around the bottom of the box with a magnet. It came back up with some very small filings attached to it, but nothing to be really
concerned about
3) Got out the 500W halogen spotlight and had a good look round the cogs. All seems fine at first sight.
So, that's about what I think I can do without taking the box out. My conclusion at this point is that it's probably knackered. I think
I'm going to try and beg/borrow/buy a second hand box (remember, I'm east of ye Olde Canal in the Netherlands, and type 9 boxes
don't exactly grow on trees over here) to get me through the summer and rebuild my own box this winter when it is engine-out time anyway for
some more upgrades.
In short: Yes, I've killed it

Just had a look at their website and 200 quid just buys the parts to modify a box to a long 1st; which puts them at around the same cost as other
companies offering this.

WOW! Locostbuilders strikes again!. Thanks for offering this, Dave. I'll try and see what I can arrange. Utrecht is just a 35min drive for me,
so that would be perfect!

No rush, I travel every week, driving every other week (in the locost through the summer).
So plenty of opportunity - but I guess you want it soon...

AAAAARGH!!! BURN, YOU F*(#@%$# CAR!
Right, I've just finished putting the "new" box in, got the car driveable and went out for a testdrive. All's well and good,
until I select fifth and give it some. Guess what? Yep, the noise is still there between 2000 and 2500 RPM, just like before.
So the box wasn't shagged at all (at least I have a spare now, so it'll never break )
What else could it be? Diff? (why would that only be noisy in 5th at a certain RPM range? Some form of vibration?) Engine? (wouldn't know what
that would be to only happen in 5th though...) Something else? Beats me.
I think I'm going to put the car away for a few days and revisit the problem after I've cooled down a bit.

could it be the gear lever?
Either rubbing on the transmission tunnel OR the westfield style extension (i'm guessing you have one) rubbing on the prop shaft?
