Web site question

Hi there.

The Mrs has a business and would like to sell the items online, are there any web site designers on here who could point me in the right direction.

Many thanks

Don't tell us what it/they are, but if you've not already then register the domain names you want to have.

Happy to help you.

I dont think u need a designer at this point, first is to decide what platform to use and why. Normally in this stage taking the "cheap" option is more expensive in long term.

I have used most of the options in the market, I am now only focused in Magento and building my own solution. Prestashop, Volo and woocommerce are other solutions.

Ill be able to recommend you based on what you would like to have.

How many singe products are you going to have for sale?

I work for a company that specialises in web design, branding, search engine optimisation etc. We've done quite a few bespoke and off the shelf e commerce systems recently.

Can't offer mates rates but if you want a proper solution the guys in the office are worth talking to. Pm me for more details if you want.

This is a VERY important decision, remember, you are going to be giving access to loads of your personal & business information to the person you get involved with here & you are almost certainly going to be in a long term relationship with whomever you choose to do the work for you, they need to be absolutely honest & 100% trustworthy. Any website will need constant updates, will you be doing things like price & product changes yourselves (the route I would recommend) or are you going to want to just pass details onto the web designer & leave them to do updates for you? (expensive!)

Any website, whatever the selling platform is based on (I would strongly recommend against Prestshop BTW, my site used to use Presta now uses Opencart which is much more versatile) will need to be kept up to date with the latest software upgrades & security fixes etc. if you simply get someone to "build you a website" & then leave you to it, it is almost certainly only a question of time before something major goes wrong & you have a major crash on your hands - who has the backups, where is hosting done?, on whose servers etc? Do you have access to your technical guy pretty much anytime, at what cost? Are you going to pay upfront for the site or is the designer going to take an ongoing commission?

All the above & a ton more is all stuff you need to be asking, as already said anything cheap usually works out much more expensive in the long run.

I cannot recommend highly enough the services of Dave Robins, he did all the original work & continues to host & provide service for Furore Products (www.furoreproducts.co.uk) & has also done the following websites https://laserpics.co.uk/ https://family-name.co.uk/ https://thefullset.co.uk/ http://livetoyoga.com https://crystallabyrinth.co.uk/ & he has also helped me out on numerous occasions with the Furore Cars website

I will u2u his contact details as he doesn't want a link on a public forum due to spam etc., he generally only takes work on a recommendation basis, so please mention my name if you do approach him

I no longer run Furore Products or Furore Cars Ltd, but would still highly recommend them for Acewell dashes, projector headlights, dominator headlights, indicators, mirrors etc, best prices in the UK! Take a look at http://www.furoreproducts.co.uk/ or find more parts on Ebay, user names furoreltd & furoreproducts, discounts available for LCB users.
Don't forget Stainless Steel Braided brake hoses, made to your exact requirements in any of around 16 colours. http://shop.ebay.co.uk/furoreproducts/m.html?_dmd=1&_ipg=50&_sop=12&_rdc=1

e.g....www.iwantthis.com/.co.uk etc.

It's not expensive and if you don't want to do it yourself then make sure it's on the list of questions you put to potential developers. It's not something I'm over familiar with, but web optimisation pays attention to domain names and favours some over others. I believe you can register the domain.co.uk and domain.com, use the .com and have the .co.uk point at the .com (catching lost traffic etc). From what little I know search engines can frown on this process though - a developer should understand this and be able to guide you through the process.

As mentioned above creating the site and giving you the tools to update it with images, prices etc is vital. Paying someone else to make changes for you can become frustrating and slow. I'd also add that enabling the visitor to purchase very easily is a "must have" feature. The easier you can make it for the visitor to purchase the more visitors will purchase.

Some years ago we used a local (Hampshire based) developer to create our work website. It worked and was a leap forward from our previous work website. We have since realised that it could be improved further and are now going through the process with a new developer to create a more fluid product focused website with the ability for our company to make changes to it.

Finally (this may be obvious to you) ensure you have good product photographs to display. Images help sell products and skills these days. Poor images can be detrimental and put visitors off purchasing. There is more skill and equipment required than many people allow for and costs can be prohibitive. If you're marketing glasses I'd be looking to the manufacturers to provide good quality images of their products to assist in selling them - it's in their interest!

Apologies if I'm teaching you to suck eggs - just sharing what I know from our work website.

Just took a look at https://furoreproducts.co.uk/home

Points I like are the generally simple and consistent appearance of the website. Once on the site it makes you feel relaxed and it's easy to navigate to products.

Its not the same to have a shop of 50000 products than having just 50, that is where you should start from.

Then decide where you want to sell your products (countries, marketplaces ebay / amazon ) anda that will point you in a clear direction.

Design and colours are coming once you have decided the platform.
