Ford/Mazda KLDE

Hi All,

I'm looking for a suitable V6 to retrofit to a Marcos GT. Ideally an all alloy engine to replace the aging essex v6 currently fitted.

I've considered the Alfa 2.5/3.0, Ford Duratec 2.5/3.0, Ford/Maxda KLDE. Also the 24v cologne (but thats still heavy)

After reading all about Clare's V6 and others following suit, I think the Probe engine is the one to go for. No only is it smaller but there are the adaptor kits available to make the job easier.

So my question is, is it possible to get the parts in order to rebuild the KLDE? Is it worth looking for a 70-80K donor car or a higher mileage one to rebuild? Does anyone know how available Clares ITB kits are and the gearbox adaptor plates etc?

I'm almost at the end of of my KLDE build into my Zero. I tried following Claire's route but unfortunately she's been very busy with everything else that I opted to have a go at making my own adapter kit. It works is probably the bottom line to it lol.

As for finding a donor and rebuilding the engine, they are becoming increasingly rare and prices seem to be going through the roof (2-3 years ago a MOTd MX6 would cost about 1k, now I'm seeing them upwards of 2-3k!) However planning a rebuild you might be able to find a spares or repairs going cheap. I have a spare engine I'm looking at rebuilding which a full overhaul kit from the USA is currently around £450 inc. shipping and taxes.

You'll be looking at 1k plus for finding an engine, rebuilding and doing an adapter kit for it. Personally I'd have looked at cheaper options myself knowing what I do now lol

Other options I have considered using are Jag S type, or Vauxhall omega (hard to find one with manual gearbox) Correct orientation and cheap to buy complete donor cars.
I would like to do a Scimitar GTE V6, and have thoughts of one in a Triumph Spitfire/GT6

I had thought about the 24v cologne used in the Omega but its still a cast iron lump. The Jag/ford Duratec seems a good option but as far as I know its a little bigger than the KLDE, and the Jag using variable valve timing does intimidate me as it's not something I've worked on before.

The KLDE seems the simplest route, Wallerzero do you have any pictures of your project?

I missed out on a V6 probe tonight for spares/repair which went for £300, It seems easy to find a spares/repair probe for <£500

Klde is a really interesting engine. 24v 2.5l all alloy v6 but runs a distributor, fuel injection and a multi length inlet manifold with two valves.

I had one for a while and tried to bike carb it - ran briefly, trying to get back to a clockwork engine.

Its heavily out of date, but I'm working on it lol.

Yeah I guess if you're looking for something to rebuild first then you can find a spares/repairs fairly straightforward. From a quick look online theres about 800 probes and 600 MX6s left in the UK. Gotta find those 800-odd that are sorned lol

I have a fully rebuilt KLDE that I was going to put in my MX5. Includes Clair's adapter plate, Triumph throttle bodies and a bunch of other parts. Decided this was a project too many with my Cyclone still needing track development, so KLDE is available for sale. U2U me if interested.
