After looking at so many diffs I believe it is a 3.62 non LSD. The deal never went through as I was offered one lcally, so I didnt get the cance to check.
If you have the diff to hand, just turn the input shaft and count how many turns you have to turn to get the output shafts to complete one rotation.
To check if it is an LSD hold one of the output shafts so it cannot rotate, turn the input shaft, if you can still turn the input shaft freely without the held output shaft moving it is open, if the output shaft cannot be held in place whilse rotating the input shaft it is an LSD (or someone has welded it!)

Hope this helps

Dan

Hi mate, the propshaft turns just under 4 times to 1 turn of the wheel so i suspect its a 3.92 and when you have the rear jacked up and turn one wheel the other side wheel turns the same way so i think its an LSD or been welded.
So 3.92 LSD i think, but would be nice to get it confirmed using the code stamped on it.
Cheers

Not that im aware, lots of people assume all dierra diffs are LSD though... just rotate one side of the diff if the other side rotates the opposit direction its an open diff.

I have just brought a Diff from a 88 sierra with disc brakes, My friend has picked it up

Has the following codes:
88GG JB 392 4A0E04

Its a New Zealand car so this might be why I can't find any information about the ratio.. but guessing from the numbers its a 3.92:1?

It depends on the wheels dimension, transmission ratios and engine RPM you are going to use.
For example for a higih reving BEC application with 13" wheels you should go for a long ratio diff like the 3.14

Right, here's what I've found out about the 6,5" diff over the last two weeks for future reference.

Fozzie, if you feel this should not be included, feel free to delete.

The 6,5" diff has a 6,5" diameter crownwheel (duh..) and the same mounting arrangement as a 7"diff. It exclusively uses push in shafts that are not interchangeable with the 7"diff as they have a different number of splines at the diff end (6,5" diff has 23 splines, 7" diff has 26 splines).

The driveshaft bearings and oil seals are not available in a rebuild kit, but have the following partnumbers:

Bearings: SKF K-LM29749
Oil seals (output shafts) 83BG-3K169 A5B (or A58, I'm not sure on that one)

For the oil seals I have used generic 40x55x10mm oil seals. Whilst the diff is not running yet, they fit the casing and driveshafts well, so I don't expect any problems there.

I do not know the part numbers and/or dimensions of the pinion bearings and seals as I've left that well alone.

Oh, and it seems the 6,5" diff is a few (4?) kg lighter then a 7" diff.

A lot of this information came from Matt's website: CLICKY who is also a member on here. Matt, thanks!

Regards,
Sebastiaan

Hi,
A friendly man at the local ford dealer let me use his microfiche machine and I've managed to get all the part numbers, FINIS numbers, exploded diagrams etc for Sierra, Granada and Scorpios. I'm putting together everything I've found at www.super7thheaven.co.uk
Hope that helps - It's a work in progress

I'm trying to found out what diff I have. The tag is completely rusted out. Can't make head or tail of the numbers. The number on the bottom casting reads
93bg-4033-ae any ideas. As I turn it it could bd a 3.6

ratios

You can turn it and count the rotations but the only real way is to remove the rear cover.
The 4033 parts are mostly from Granada's and Scorpios.
If you remove the rear cover there should be some white or yellow painted writting on the crown wheel.
If this is missing it should also be stamped into that wheel as well.
See http://www.super7thheaven.co.uk/Sierra_Rear_Differential. Hope that helps.

Hello guys,

I've just bought a sierra from the 11 june 1990.
WF0BXXGBBBLJ30605

Fitted with a 2.0 DOHC engine

Normally, it's a XR4I.

The question is : is it a limited slip diff ?

With ratio ?

Whether it is limited slip or not, there is only one true way to tell and that is to check the small metal tag on the diff. Ford were strange when it comes to LSD, some had it, yet other identical cars didn't. I have a 2.0DOHC 4wd and it is LSD but that doesn't mean yours will be too. Mines a 3.92 but yours could be 3.62 or 3.92:1.
It begs the question - 'who was on LSD?'
I'm afraid I'm not into Ford numbers enough to decode the VIN number.
Sorry, but I think you've gotta get under that rear end

Unfortunately, you've got one of the diffs with the shorthand code.
But....
You have a 3.92:1 diff. Built May 8th 1990.
The JB suggests it's non LSD
Really, you need a diff with AEA or AA (anything with 2 x 'A' in it) where the JB is.

i am after a 3.92 LSD and been offered what Im told is one.... it has the following numbers:

ford 83 BG-4210-J E 3.92
89 GG-4k 343-FB

Is this the real deal? Would I be laying down a proud set of '11s' in the road, or foolishly spinning one wheel with an empty wallet??

Some knowledge on this one would be much appreciated guys....

Bit suspicious

Have you tried turning the front flange? The two shafts should turn the same way. Hold onto one of the output flanges to make sure.
Sorry, but the code suggests it's not an LSD.
Under 99.9% of cases, an LSD would have at least two A in the code e.g. 83 BG-4210-AA and not 83 BG-4210-J.

It looks like a bog stock Sierra diff to me.

my car already has a 3.92 standard diff, the last thing I want is a duplicate :-)
The owner of this is convinced his is an LSD but I didnt think the codes reflected this either. Have messaged instruction to him to test it and get back to me.
Thanks for the reply, always re-assuring when someone says the same as I thought.

if its an aftermarket LSD (Tran-X, quaife, Gripper, ZF etc) the case tag may still show the non-lsd number. whip off back plate and take pics and post up here
