Evening all, I want to replace my power cable from my battery to my starter but I'm just wondering what sort of size/amperage cable I require. Engine is a 4.6 Rover v8.

what is the cable length from battery/relay/starter?
and don't forget the earth/chassis path is just as important

39" from battery to starter motor and yes the earths are clean and good size cable. Thanks Sam

I used 35mm2 on my last one. I will be using 50mm2 on this one. Ford oem looks to be inbetween.

I've measured compression spikes drawing 185A from my car engine starter, 80-100 on a small bike engine. I would worry less about the current rating (it's short and it will be overridden by....) worry about the voltage drop along it (or more importantly the engine block negative) causing your ground reference to bounce all over. Just buy the fattest you can find reasonably priced.

cheap way of doing it is to buy some 600amp jump cables and cut them to size.

35mm2 is plenty enough.

Oh and don't any more than about £15 a metre for any size.

believe starterman, and if he were to say: go for a high torque/geared starter, believe that too

I used 35mm2 copper welding cable on the Lotus engine for both battery leads, starter & earth.

Depending where you get the info from thats 250 or 300 amp.

I also have a geared starter motor.




Most cheap jump leads that I've seen are aluminium wire so be warned if you go this route.
