Im actualy Pro-budget capping

Me and 5 others went out with a budget of £50 to get mini moto's (pocket bikes)
We all met up (very hungover one sunday)
Made ourselfs a track (around a farm yard)
And had some of the closest most exciting racing the world has ever seen.

So in a way, it would be dull without these budget cap politics...

How hard can it be?

I watched the coverage of Goodwood last night - makes you remember what F1 cars looked and sounded like when they still raced

Cars made of metals that were fixed in the pits and chucked out to race again - not made of CF where the disintegrate at the drop of a fart!
Unfortunately with technology goes price but these days there are such small gains for such large amounts of money, the budget capping in stages is a good idea.

The problem with budget capping is the same as seen in the PPC £999 challenge. Who's to say what something it worth so all the big teams will still pay millions to get the last msec of advantage from whatever rules are in place, and 'buy' stuff for pennies from another company that takes the financial 'hit' for them.

I think F1 is dull because of the rules.

The circuits are pretty much a fixed thing. A strip of tarmac, yay wide, so long and goes round in a loop with some left turns, some right turns, a chicane and some elevation changes.

If I was in charge of F1 there would be 4 rules:-

1. The driver must sit in the car and operate the controls.
2. Four wheels
3. Petrol engines using pump unleaded fuel.
4. Driver must get out alive at the end of the race.

Engine choice is free, turbos / superchargers / kers / anything you want.

Tyre choice is free. Go for a hardwearing compound and don't pit, or a softer tyre and pit if you want.

Similarly fuel tank size is free. Fuel from start to finish, or sprint from pit stop to pit stop.

Aero package is free. Obviously with mega engines is going to come the need for advanced aero packages to hold them on the track.

Brakes are free, any size / material / location you want. You are going to need decent brakes if you have unlimited engines.

Electronics are free. ABS, traction control, active suspension etc etc are all going to be needed if the cars aren't to spin off the track in a fireball at the first corner.

Basically make cars that go round the existing tracks as quickly as possible!

I think F1 should be the pinacle of motorsport and the cutting edge of development. Loads of things we have on our tin tops started out as F1 developments, ABS, turbos, traction control etc etc. Where are the next developments going to come from if not F1?

Mike

I would add

"It must fit in a box of dimensions x by y by z"

To stop cars getting so big that no-one can get past!

i'd add - must not disturb the air behind by X

- to allow the car behind to run aero and the less disturbance the less drag so better designs will come out for production cars reducing drag / fuel inefficiency.

KERS was a good idea as it promoted something that could be used in production cars in a different guise.

So basically the rules would boil down to:

1. Team with the most money wins.
2. See rule 1.

I don't see the need for a 4 wheel rule. 3 or more would give more interesting designs a chance. Tyrell's 6 wheeler was an interesting idea and might be worth it for the unlimited power they need to put down.

But I agree with MikeRJ, most money wins isn't very interesting either as it'll end up a procession in team money order with no overtaking.

Ok, so in my new role as Bernie, I have revised my rules to suit your comments:-

1. The driver must sit in the car and operate the controls.
2. More than 2 wheels
3. Petrol engines using pump unleaded fuel.
4. Driver must get out alive at the end of the race.
5. Car must fit in a box no larger than 2m high, 2.4m wide x 5m long.
6. Must not disturb the air behind by X (I'll like MikeR work out the details on that one!).

and finally

7. A budget cap of £250

Cheers

Mike (aka Bernie)

Do you guys realise you are just making a new set of rules, the same thing you are all complaining about?

I personally dont find F1 at the moment boring but if i were in the top seat of the FIA, i would just strip out all electronics that wernt related to safety and let the driver do more of the work.

How long can i resist the temptation to drop a V8 in?
