Bulkhead thermal insulation
vonmoogen - 18/12/12 at 11:45 AM

Not locost related but thought the collective mind might help on this.

I've just removed the bulkhead and transmision tunnel insulation from my porsche 924 that i'm converting to fast road/track day spec. The old insulation looks bitumen based and weighs a tonne! Any suggestions for a lighter weight alternative? I've seen dynamat and the like but not had any experience of it.

Any recommendations welcome.

Cheers, Rob

there's loads of supplers, woolies trim and carbuilder solutions spring to mind, although their best stuff is lead based!

Rob, if you're converting to track specific use, why worry about the insulation at all? Its only extra weight...?

Sound insulation, don't worry/need
Heat insulation, silvered heat mat, Zircontec, cheap B&Q silver bubble wrap or radiator reflector stuff

I have used this for heat insulation.

though using the car for long journeys with no sound insulation is very tiring, like my landy

I bought this for in my engine bay.

Thanks for the replies. I did think of doing without but it will be used on the road so some insulation would be useful. I'm not too bothered about the sound insulation but engine and exhaust heat might be an issue. I'll have a look at some of the links.
