Fitting a Screen
whitestu - 4/4/07 at 07:21 AM

Thinking of fitting a full screen to the Indy at some point.

Anyone got advice on best supplier and which wipers to use?

Am I right in thinking I can get away without a demister as I've passed the SVA?

Thanks

Stu

You can get away with pretty much anything if you've passed SVA.

No demisters and no wipers if that's what you want.

My screen came off a Caterham but I don't think that will fit an Indy.

the police will take a very dim view if they see you driving in the rain with no wipers and it will also fail the MOT. A heated windscreen will sort out the demist issue.

If you can get hold of one an old VW beetle windscreen wiper setup fits and works very well.

Thanks

I'll definately be fitting wipers - I don't plan on having a soft top so I don't think misting up will be a problem.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I don't think it will fail the MOT for not having a demister / heated screen.

your correct about the demist, it's not required by the MOT.

Though from experience I have found the glass will still fog up very easily even with no hood in the rain.

Might need to rethink the demister then. Are heated screens expensive?

tiger i belive do a heated windscreen, do not which model think it was the cat and with the avon version to follow.

mini wipers are normally used

Westfield also do heated screens but I don't know the cost and I doubt they're cheap. There is quite a lot of room under the passenger side of the scuttle for a mini heater unit.

For what it's worth I've used

1) Mini wiper boxes
2) 110 degree Lucas wiper motor
3) Mini chromed upper escutcheons (the angled bits)
4) Mini rubber lower escutheons (the angled bit under the scuttle that holds the wiper box at an angle)
5) Bog standard L hand park spoon type wiper blades
6) 8" Tex wiper blades (spooned obviously)

This set-up worked well on the Caterham screen. But again, it depends upon it fitting to the Indy scuttle....
IF so its pretty easy to get one which is heated.. otherwise its heater time!!!

Pat (aka mangogrooveworkshop) on here makes a screen tailor made for the indy - the scuttle is not symmetrical

U2U him for details

Cheers

Hmm, I have tried what I believe is a Westfield frame on my indi and it fits perfectly, haven't noticed any lack of symmetry

I've got a Tiger one - fits the Cat. I think it was about £40 IIRC on top of usual screen cost.

Mini wipers are ok - you need to modify the wiper motor gearing to make them park properly. You can pick new motors up cheaply of eBay, but watch the price of the wiper boxes - they're not cheap !

In my experience driving in the rain you need wipers on the inside of the screen as well as the outside!

I have fitted one of mangogrooveworkshop's screens on my Indy and have put a Mini wiper motor set on it also.
It was a doddle to fit and I think it looks the part (check out my photo archive).

I believe MK are selling these windscreens also so just contact them.

I fitted a screen and before I fitted the wipers I got caught out in the rain.
Not a good exprience. In the end I had to pull over and wait for the rain to stop.
