Which tow van
amalyos - 17/6/11 at 07:30 PM

I'm looking for a van to tow my race car, and use for sleeping at races.

The 350 Transit seems to fit the bill, but I was wondering if anyone had used a Petrol/LPG van for towing. Not sure if there would be enough grunt, even though they are around 145ps.

Any advise welcome

I suppose it partly depends on how you drive when towing. I found my 110bhp sprinter could pull 5.7 tonnes up a hill, though admittedly 2nd gear was barely up to it. Assuming a racecar on a trailer wont be over 1500 kgs, and also that you wont be trying to do traffic light grand prix or 90mph, it should cope fine.

Is LPG really worth the effort though, since the van would command a premium and you might not be doing as many miles as other potential buyers? Just a thought.

Pull my 7 with a traffic lpg van, not got the guts a diesel as but does the job fine.

Van will be for sale soon, need a larger van as much as I keep putting it off as I,m sorta attached to this one.

We've got an 85ps diesel transit in work that I've towed a 2.5t boat with stuff in the back of the van, and whilst not exactly quick it would easily do 70 on the flat, so a 145ps petrol should be better than that.

I used a Renault Traffic diesel to tow toy car to Emerald and was very impressed by it. But then, I like them anyway, so slightly biased perhaps

I used a 350 Transit for the same purpose last season - it was the 125 TD engine and pulled like a train! I towed quite a large twin axle trailer with MX5 race car on it.

It was quite a long combination for some of the hillclimb venues but didn't cause any problems apart from once when I got lost in the lanes around Mamhead hillclimb, in the dark!
