Saxo VTS? Fits the budget with room to buy mods too! A friend has one on track and I was astonished at how capable they are!!

172 is a good choice although you will eat all your budget just on purchase unless you find a bargain.

MX5 or Nissan 200sx would be my choice for cheap track thrills... To be fair, just about anything is fun to hoon around a track in!

When buying a 172 budget for new belts at a specialist (£500-600)

They make brilliant track toys though, and it was between a 172 and a kit when I was looking to buy

also depends on what tracks you expecting to do, small front wheel drive hatchback saxo, clio peugeot etc good round twisty tracks and readily available <£2k and easy to maintain

If I had 2k I would probably build another 2.0 16v nova, but if I wanted 'out of the box' performance, it would be a 172, you might even squeeze an early, high mileage 182 for a lil over £2k. Go for the cup so your not paying (In £ and weight) for A/C, leather and xenons.)

Thanks for all suggestions and advice. I like the idea of a bit of boost but that probably means bigger bills when it goes pop. I like the idea of an MX5 but probably a bit wheezy. Going to be busy looking at eBay, auto trader etc

Clio's are alot of fun on track, here's my old one at Cadwell, the only downside to my Clio it could have done with a LSD, would have made a few seconds a lap difference, but there's not many other hot hatches out there with LSD's as standard either, but for the money you can't go far wrong with a Clio.

Get updated clutch for saxo. I've killed mine and haven't even had a track day yet.

Personally i would be on pistonheads and look under road legal track day cars.

It would exciting to see the variety of cars for your money and they will probably be already set up for track with good rubber and trick bits. The engines have also used so should be no surprises when you red line it for the first time in its life.
