Thread Identification - Help!
TimC - 28/11/06 at 03:55 PM

Hi All

Have a problem,,, I can't identify the thread on a fitting I have. It's from my pre-drilled oil cooler bolt on my R1.

Its the one on the right hand side of the following pic:
Warning - quite large!
The thread on the left is M10x1, the middle is M10x1.25. The one of the right sort of looks like M10x1 but I'm not convinced. What do you think?

It's not UNF/UNC/BSW/BSF. Help appreciated!

Either 1/8 NPT or 1/8 BSPT.....you can see the taper on the pic..unless it's my eyes...

1/8 NPT is 27 TPI so it will look close to M10x1.0

1/8 BSP?
or 1/8 NPT?

RazMan - 28/11/06 at 04:14 PM

It is a fair bet that it is npt as a lot of sensors use this thread

Hellfire - 28/11/06 at 04:17 PM

Agreed. I'd go with 1/8th NPT.

Just got the verniers out - doesn't taper.

You certain?....it sure looks tapered..

Another option would be 1/8 BSPP, but there does not appear to be a proper shoulder for a sealing washer......

My Oil pressure one didn't taper either but the hole it went into did.

The problem was it wouldn't seal properly on the oil cooler bolt as it was too short.
So I remote mounted it with bits bought from thinkauto.

Double checked - no taper. It has a larger 'shoulder' and I think this combines with the change in colour to trick the eyes!

well measuring off my screen, with a steel rule, it does have a taper. about 63mm at the bottom of the thread, down to about 57 about 3 threads down from the end. that's 35mm of thread length for scale.

the other 2 measure up as parallel though

could that be npt then?

I've not ever seen an oil pressure switch (or is it a pressure sensor?) that didn't have a tapered thread. Presumably it will have to be sealed with a copper washer if it has parallel threads?

TimC - 28/11/06 at 06:55 PM

You're right - the very end tapers - I though it needed to be further up - what do I know?!

Cheers

guessing it's the same as fitted on my SP1 engine, (looks the same) So 1/8 BSP.

Had same issue identifying the thread, pretty surprised to find the Japs using BSP.

No worries - help very much appreciated fella.

it'll be 1/8 bspt (tapered) not bsp (parrallel). Most jap car engines (so i presume bike engines also) use bspt for oil pressure senders etc, and aftermarket jap gauges eg hks, apexi etc come with bspt fittings.
