Finally-Ive started
liam.mccaffrey - 5/12/07 at 04:14 PM

After 3 years of hanging around this forum talking a lot of bull crap about what my plans are and what im gonna do. I have actually started a build.

I relocated to the states from Wales about 2 months ago. A chance mention of where i live led chrisf on the board to invite me down to Hallet race track to see his fireblade 7 the very next day.

With renewed enthusiasm i sold all of my parts and tools back home, had my shocks sent over and started on the lookout for a donor. Over here there aren't many mk 1 escorts and my search for a merkur xr4ti (North american Sierra) was not too sucessful. Speaking to chrisf it seemed that a miata (mx-5) was the order of the day. I did some bidding on ebay and on friday i took delivery of 2 Mazda miatas( same auction and really close) one a runner and the other with the engine already out (but included).

All this for the equivalent of 400 quid, dont you just love the exchange rate!

I have all the tube steel coming on friday, I will be keeping a build diary and making a website around christmas time.

Excellent. Have you got Keith Tanner's book yet? http://www.cheapsportscar.net/
He pops on here occasionally.

Enjoy the build; it's the best part really. Of course, you have 3 months 'til the track season starts You'll make it.

--Have fun, Chris

Remember, if you get stuck, Keith Tanner is a phone call away, but also don't give up, just farm out the work rather than abandon it. My own belief is that it is not a project so you can prove to yourself and everybody else that you can reinvent the wheel, rather to build a cool car, that people who are nice to you get to ride in!
