So sorry for such a simple/silly question but I have a mocal oil cooler with no thermostat on my Fireblade motor and was wondering how you then compensate for this when filling motor with oil?

I measured out how much extra oil the cooler took and added this when full (plus a little extra for lines) before cranking motor over.

Problem is my oil cooler is fitted upside down so the oil can drain back out of the cooler and in to the sump instead of if it was the other way in which it would trap the full amount in the cooler making it easier to check/trust dip stick level.

Just wonder what you guys do to compensate for extra capacity or if there is some form of 'trap' in the system which means i can just fill to top level on dip stick and disregard my worries?

Can you not drop the oil cooler onto the floor the proper way up so it is lower than the sump whilst filling? - I'd assume you would need to do this to bleed it anyway?

Are you running any sort of modified sump/dry sump system?

Once full the oil will not drain back. It can't as there's no way for the air to get in... It's like submersing a glass in a bowl of water then lifting it inverted; The water fills the glass, as long as the rim doesn't break the surface.
The issue with having it mounted that way up is ensuring you get all the air bled out. It should sort it self but it's probably best to dismount it, tip it the right way up and run it just to be sure.

...and yes there are bike engines with a dip stick.

Which bike engines?

Any that are used in BECs?

If not they are not really relevant

Hehe it's a 2010 blade so yeah dipstick not sightglass . Running an AB Performance Billet sump.
