I haven't started building my car yet but i'm trying to deciced on an engine. i'm looking at the pre 89 SOHC Sierra engine but i heard alot about it being to high which i can imagine would affect the handling. Then I heard about modifying the sump and getting a different rocker cover to remedy this problem. So I'd like to know if you can buy a modified sump and if not how do i change it.

There are loads of people that'll modify it for you (Martin Keenan Engineering etc.) but you can also buy a Ford alloy sump which is shorter but wider to compensate. I would guess you'll need a matching (shorter) oil pickup pipe to go with it.

The other option is to make your own, there's various sites that'll tell you exactly how to do it but basically you need to cut the bottom off (saving the sump plug hole) and then re-weld it back but 1" or so shorter and wider (if you want) to compensate for the loss of oil.
You also need to shorten the oil pickup pipe appropriately.

HTH (and makes sense!)
