Side to rear outlet exhaust.

Got fed up with the exhaust on the V6. Too loud a bark at high revs, fluffy/farty on overrun and without a balance pipe sounded like a
3 cylinder
So decided to reroute the outlets to the rear with a balance pipe.

Now much nicer tone, not fluffy/farty and sounds like a V6
I have put a video on YouTube, as usual audio and video are not as good as on the PC But it
gives an overall impression. If you are on the https:/ version of this site and can't see the video, click on the info icon next to the padlock on the address bar and change permissions, or go here https://youtu.be/1sla98Td-xs.

Neat, but how's the ground clearance now?

Perfect timing 40 inches, many thanks as was starting work on the exhaust this weekend for my AJ30 lump. was going to go for an easy side pipe either side but had questioned myself about only hearing 3 cylinders. you have confirmed my fears. Will have to review my options, still fancy 6-2-1 with a single silencer out one side or look at where i can fit a balance pipe. wont be as easy but the noise has to be right.

Looks like fun to drive, how do you find the ratios in the S Type gearbox?

cheers, Pojo

Nick, the lowest point of the exhaust is 90mm clearance, the same as the sump

Pojo, it got really annoying, once the novelty had worn off. The balance pipe is in, roughly, the same place as on my S-type
The motor has so much grunt, the MK will pull away easily in 3rd gear, I don't often use 1st and when pushing on basically use 3rd and 4th, 5th has a speed range of 35 to 145mph if I feel any lazier.
The rear section of exhaust is rigidly mounted, with 15mm clearance from the bottom of the car, self adhesive bike fairing heat shield for protection, and connects to the silencer with ILock flexy pipe, works well.

Cool, just wondered

Looks good and must be a satisfying task to complete. 7s with rear exit exhausts are rare from what I've seen, but your ground clearance seems reasonable to me.

Have you noticed any difference in power? I've been looking at doing the same (similar to Caterham) but have heard it saps BHP.

cheers

Not noticed any difference in the way it drives, apart from feeling more refined now the exhaust isn't bellowing in my right ear
Looking at it logically, it has two less restrictive silencers, against the four, and only half the tubing of the S-Type and that is rated at 240bhp
