Nostalgia
chrisg - 17/7/09 at 07:47 PM

All the posts about the site reminded me of the beginings of Locostbuilders.

We were all unhapplily muddling along on TOL (ask your grandad) trying to teach the Americans the meaning of irony, while they got increasingly wound up about us taking the p*ss. Along came this young whippersnapper telling us all about this new site he'd made and asking us to take a look.

Well I did and I'm still here (Plus the TOL yankees threw me out for speaking my mind, not that I bear a grudge.....much )

That was almost 10 years ago, and without the site I doubt I'd be building my third car or having a writing career.

So thanks Chris for starting this place up (and Fozzie for keeping it spic and span) and thanks too to all the members that have helped me out, it's much appreciated

Cheers

Chris

If there is, we've well over 2 years to plan it

Strangely enough I had a search earlier today for the original message by Chris W on TOL.

Here it is for posterity

Hi guys

Been reading the forum off an on for a few months now but this is my
first post. I myself have a few gripes with the way eGroups/Yahoo
works - it's a very slow system, it's very difficult to follow
discussion and the adverts annoy me!

I've therefore put a new style forum on www.locostbuilders.co.uk for
you all to have a look at. The system itself is very familiar to me
(I've used it on a number of websites I have built) and feedback has
always been good.

If the general consensus is that my system is superior perhaps we can
all move over? I know a few of you might think the change is worth
it but I urge you to take a few minutes to have a look and register
at www.locostbuilders.co.uk.

Two final points:

1. I'm looking for your suggestions, especially for catagories! These
are what I could think of judging by the sort of posts seen here.

2. This is in no way trying to exclude those who manage this eGroup
(although I'm not sure there are any) If anyone feels disgruntled
please email me (webmaster@...) and I will happily
involve them in the running of the new system.

Please take a few moments to have a look and post your
comments/queries/discussion points! www.locostbuilders.co.uk

Thanks

Chris

One of the reasons Chris gives for wanting to migrate from TOL is the speed of the site Kinda ironic

Fozzie - 17/7/09 at 09:11 PM

This is a fast site......

There are far more people with internet now than there were 8 years ago.

The trouble occurs (as with road traffic) at peak times, when there can be 'traffic jams'..on the super speed highway.
Too many people trying to log in at the same time.

Just leave it a couple of minutes and try again, or look in after the rush hour.

Graememk, l'm sure you really do know, but it is only the For Sale section that is affected for those who haven't contributed, not the entire site

Thanks to all of you guys too, you are the best!

We do have 2 years to plan a 10th......

Fozzie

maybe chris' new project is a time machine and he's just forgotten that he's come back to see how it all started?

David Jenkins - 18/7/09 at 03:07 PM

Good grief!

Is it really almost 10 years ago? I'd started building my car quite a while before then!

I even remember when you had that dancing mouse as your avatar, David. That must have been pretty much at the site's beginning!

Chris

David Jenkins - 19/7/09 at 09:54 AM

I don't know what you mean...

MikeR - 19/7/09 at 10:51 AM

oh-my-god
oh-my-god

10 years ......

ah, phew, its not. Heck, if the site had been going ten years then i'd been building for longer I was about to panic!!!!

I admit I wasn't impressed when this site was set up. I was getting frustrated with the off topic banter on TOL and thought this wouldn't do anything to help. I reluctantly joined a little after it started as the discussion topics on TOL died away. Seem to have got stuck on here since .....

congrats and well done to Chris for 8 years and hopefully to a successful 2 more. BTW oct 16 2011 is a sunday .... perhaps a meet up ????

chrisg - 19/7/09 at 08:36 PM

It seemed longer.

Apparently I've been married ten years, although to be honest that seemed more like 50........

I was giving notice so that we can plan...*cough*

Meeting sounds good.

Cheers

Chris
