Calling all Fury, Striker, Phoenix, Riot ,J15,etc owners
adithorp - 7/5/14 at 07:19 PM

"Jeremy Phillips designed cars.
Cars from the JP stable, including the Striker, Fury, Phoenix, Riot, J15 and many more."

A proposed new section for owners/builders of any of the cars of Jeremy's design has been brought up in the past. For instance when Chris started the MX5 section

After a recent u2u to Chris he's said that if I start a discussion about it and it raises enough interest he'll consider implementing it.

So if you've got any of JP's 16 designs (or even just an interest in them) shout up. There's got to be at least as many of us as there are for some of the cars that have their own section.

Sam_68 - 7/5/14 at 07:29 PM

As an ex-Phoenix owner, I'd certainly like to see a JPSC section on the forum.

raplma - 7/5/14 at 07:32 PM

As a Star owner I'll second that

Eltel - 7/5/14 at 07:33 PM

Hi all, this has prompted me to finally register to this site.
I think it's an excellent idea and would be a useful source of info for
those who would build one of Jeremys cars. I'm just waiting for the
time my finances allow me to buy a Vectis kit (if ever!)

Two in the family...
My red Fiat/Lancia 16V turbo powered car - still broken Jeff but getting there - 2014 is slipping by fast, but on track soon I hope !!

Don't get on here very often, but could be persuaded to make the change & that this is another place for JPSC info.
Can see already there's more interest & lurkers than I thought.

Locostbuilders now bookmarked

Cheers
Matt

adithorp - 8/5/14 at 08:53 AM

Onto 5 pages in 12hrs (and most of that overnight) would suggest there's enough demand. Although any question could be asked in a relevant section already, having a specific JP area would help to get make specific queries spotted by the right people to answer them.

The JPSC club discussed ways to encourage people to get involved with the club at our AGM last weekend. One of the suggestions was to try and get a section on here with possibly a sticky thread pointing people towards the club and it's activities. Hopefully we'd both benefit from more traffic should it go ahead.

rost - 8/5/14 at 09:31 AM

Striker and Fury, count me in

I thought that was quite ironic too. Just disapointed mycar is just out of shot in every picture

adithorp - 8/5/14 at 02:18 PM

So, if Chris agrees to a new section, what are peoples thought on a title for it?

In the debate that followed the MX5 section, it got whittled down to...

"Jeremy Phillips designed cars"

...and the strap-line below...

"Cars from the JP stable, including the Striker, Fury, Phoenix, Riot, J15 and many more."

monkeyarms - 8/5/14 at 02:35 PM

Good idea

Adi,

I took a good few pictures of small features on your car, wheel arches, etc, forgot to take an overall shot,. perhaps some else did?

Yes please..

me! - 8/5/14 at 04:59 PM

+1 from me!

stevebubs - 8/5/14 at 05:00 PM

"Cars from the JP (Sylva) stable, including the Stylus, Striker, Fury, Phoenix, Riot, J15, Leader and Star"

bigfoot4616 - 8/5/14 at 05:53 PM

yep, good idea

inkafone - 8/5/14 at 06:45 PM

Good idea - think it should just be called SYLVA's. From memory names used are - Star Leader Striker Fury Stylus Menace Mojo Riot J15 & Vectis. Then there's derivatives like the Leader SS, Fury Spyder, Mojo SE etc

Yes, I think that Sylva should definitely get a mention in the headline.

I'm not sure how 'famous' Jeremy is outside of owners and hardcore enthusiasts - there may be people who have heard of Sylva but who wouldn't connect the name 'Jeremy Philips'. Certainly, if you do a search for 'Sylva', Sylva Autokits is the second to top result, whereas there appear to be quite a lot of JP's in the world!

Maybe even just:
Jeremy Philip's Sylva stable

I'm not sure you'd fit the full list of JP's designs into the strapline. Assuming not, and in the interests of anti-discrimination, how about limiting it to just currently available (and perhaps more recent models) so that we'd at least stand a chance of picking up Google searches by most of those coming to the cars afresh? With due respect to Star owners, there can't be that many active examples still around these days?

Bit of a bugger that he's been so prolific over the years, innit?

Star
Leader
Striker
Phoenix
Fury
Stylus
Jester
Mojo
Riot
Fulcrum
J15
Vectis

Have I missed any?!

dickie b - 8/5/14 at 07:27 PM

Just to be awkward.. I have a Fury with a curvy Phoenix rear end.

Sylva Furynix.

Great idea though - count me in!

SPYDER - 8/5/14 at 08:02 PM

What about the first CYANA CARS variant? Wasn't it just a Phoenix-esque bodied Striker Mk4?

[Edited on 8/5/14 by SPYDER]

dickie b - 8/5/14 at 08:25 PM

I would say yes - Cyanas have a natural home among Sylvas as the JP DNA is defo there to a certain degree.

Same for Meggt (mojo) and Riot Cars etc... The long extinct Swindon Sports Cars made the Leader for a while too..?

dickie b - 8/5/14 at 08:28 PM

I think early Cyanas were mx5 based on an all new chassis . A mix of Sylva clubman /mk4/ phoenix body panels though.

adithorp - 8/5/14 at 08:36 PM

But should the section title credit Sylva as a company that only currently markets (if JP "markets" anything) 2 of his designs and not credit any of the companies selling his earlier designs.

SPYDER - 8/5/14 at 08:39 PM

The first CYANA was built on the square tube STRIKER Mk4 chassis. The jigs and rights were acquired from Stuart Taylor Motorsport IIRC.
The subsequent round tube STM Phoenix chassis (like my car) had little or no JP input AFAIK. Full of JP DNA though, as you rightly say.

A lot of people still associate things like the Fury, Jester, Mojo, Striker, Pheonix etc with Sylva...agreed you don't want to alienate the new owners who have developed the cars first, but they all have the same root..

Would be good to have a sticky at the top of the forum with a list of the cars and their current stable...

It's arguable, I know.

But would most people recognise Caterham, Xanthos, Evante and (stretching the point a little) the VX220 and Tesla as 'cars from the Colin Chapman stable', or 'cars from the Lotus stable', do you think?

JP and Sylva Autokits Ltd. are effectively one and the same, and all models originated as Sylva products. So whether you call the section 'Jeremy Philip's stable' or 'Sylva stable' (or both: I still reckon that 'Jeremy Philip's Sylva Stable' is snappy enough - alliterative, even - and covers both bases), it amounts to the same thing.

...just that many people will recognise the name of the Sylva marque from magazine articles and race results who may not necessarily recognise JP's name or link him to a particular model?

In which case 'Jeremy Philip's Sylva Stable' will educate them.

Yes, good idea... it's hard to keep track, sometimes, and contact details for those models still available would be useful to some people.

We could add photos as a 'spotters guide'... who's going to volunteer as Chief Anorak to do the definitive guide to the various Marks of Striker/Phoenix/Clubmans?

adithorp - 8/5/14 at 10:41 PM

It's been pointed out to me than JP himself isn't all that happy about the JPSC club having his name in it's title. He's too modest by far.

"Sylva derived" is starting to look like a Leader

[Edited on 8/5/14 by adithorp]

BDMStriker - 8/5/14 at 11:27 PM

Another Striker thumbs up

loggyboy - 8/5/14 at 11:35 PM

originated rather than derived?

ahh what does he know!!!

nre - 9/5/14 at 06:38 AM

Given the level of traffic on this thread, yes from me!

I was worried about further diluting the number of places to talk 'Sylva', but it seems there are already more people on here than anywhere else...!

Camber Dave - 9/5/14 at 07:14 AM

Well this thread took off didn't it

I would have to add my vote.
With a mate, we have the Leader moulds, jigs and sales rights.
I have been remaking the chassis initially to be Sierra based but now obviously to take MX 5 parts.
I am always busy with my main work so progress is slow.

We did recently offer it for sale through CKC but no takers. If anyone else has the time and commitment to take it on get in touch.
Otherwise I will continue as and when time allows.
I would consider building/rechassis-ing a customer car in tandem as that would also focus my attention…..

Dave

Took me a while to click this post as I not a Fury, Striker, Phoenix, Riot, J15, etc owner, but would like to see a JP section happen. Great idea!

striker-4age - 10/5/14 at 10:10 AM

Simon will have to be let off from not owning a Sylva-raw car as he did own the best car around !!!!!!!!!

Ok I now own the car so I may be a little biased 👍

With reference to JP, that is why we are the JPSC and not Jeremy Phillips Club, although JP isn't ecstatic about the JP bit he tolerates it and supports us!
Why he's so shy I don't know, he should be extremely proud of all his achievements.
Edd
