Type 9 - hydraulic clutch conversion
hazardpro - 14/10/17 at 07:40 PM

Hi all - Ive not been on here for AGES but after months of work work work, i'm finally ready to put some garage hours into my car over the winter, which will include some improvements.

I need to replace my clutch and have a small gearbox leak somewhere so its coming out.

I have decided to change my pedals and want to run a hydraulic clutch setup which I believe can be done. Has anyone done this before?

I believe I need this: release bearing kit

Anything I need to mod? Any specific clutch or flywheel I would need to change to?

PS I have a zetec/type9/turbo setup.

Thanks in advance

H

You will probably need to cut off the thrush hearing guide tube the input shaft runs inside to allow the slave cylinder to fit. It also need spacers behind to suit your set up, which you will have to work out what you need, mines 12mm

No need to cut off the thrust bearing guide. The whole assembly is replaced by the hydraulic kit. It just unbolts and the new one including spacer fits in its place

so all I need to worry about is what spacer is required - right? Which I work out when installing?

So other special bits required? No mods outside of the bellhousing?

Thanks

Burton power do a kit which bolts on the front of the gearbox. I have it on mine and it works great...

Don't forget the travel on the clutch pedal, you might well need a stop for it

I had braided hose on my clutch cylinder, fit & forget..

Had an SBD kit on mine but iirc some of the kits use a SAAB release bearing arrangement?

Do you know what the p/n of the Saab slave cylinder is?

You need to look at the APC range. There are various spacers and mounts to choose from to make sure that you get the correct stroke on the piston. You need to buy the mount and the cylinder then mock up the assembly to measure what size spacer you need if any.

How does that compare to something like this?

Type 9 Escort RWD Hydraulic Clutch Conversion Kit - Centrally Mounted

a stupid question maybe but setting it up/working out what spaces are required is all done with the engine/gearbox out right?
