After a bit of advice as someone told me over the weekend that the clutch on the 5PW engine doesn't like fully synthetic oil

I have filled mine with Shell Advance Ultra Fully Synthetic 4T, as this is what I used to use on my road bike (CBR).

As I haven't used mine in anger yet I don't know if it will be a problem or not (it seemed OK on the speed check on the rollers at my first SVA test!!!)

If it is an issue does it mean I will need a complete new clucth

mines on full fat oil and is fine, im coming up for 2000 miles since sva in jan and it will be fed on fully synth again

Mine is on fully synth and no issues here

Isn't F/S the right stuff? looking at castrols site it is what they recommened - Power Racing 4T although a chap down the road who owns a big bike garage working on maily yamaha's did recommend silkolene P/S oil but for far less i could get the castol above making it a no brainer.

I thought that F/S was the right thing to use, it was just that I was told over the weekend that the F/S affected the clutch plates.....but from the replies it looks like he was talking out of his @......

I think the advice is along the lines of:-

If it's always been run on fully synth, the clutch will be fine.

If it's been run on semi synth, changing to fully synth, you'll get clutch slip.

I think you may also get problems if you change from fully synth down to semi synth.

(6,500 miles on semi synth btw).

my yamaha garage told me to use fully synthetic. its what the bike comes with...

My VFR has horrendous clutch slip until upto temperature with fully synthetic, but is absolutely fine with semi synth.

Although it took about 800 miles to bed the clutch back in when I went from fully synth back to semi synth.

The ZX12R was run on fully synth and never showed any signs of slip, but does have a Muzzy clutch.

Fully synth is not an issue in the R1 as long as the plates have been soaked in a mineral or semi synth oil before they are used.

Using non- OEM plates is probably more of an issue. Keep to Yamaha plates and all will be fine. I have used Barnett Kevlar plates in the past and they were Sh*te.
