mk indy - zx9r - turbo project with pics

some of you are aware i was looking into turbo-charging my zx9r powwerd kit car, ive been quite busy with work but ive filled the gaps to get it done.

i basicaly orderd most of the intenal stuff and done loads of reseach ect and brought stuff as i went.

any questions ask away im here to help

striped down & refitted with:
z1000 (2003) - complete gearbox with selectors
z1000 (2003) - pistons & block with welded engine mounts
2x zx9 base gaskets
1x zx9 block spacer - supplied by chris
1x zx9 cometic metal head gasket
1x uprated set of head bolts - holsot racing

then started making exhaust manifold & inlet manifold pipe work.
i used a impreza turbo ihi vf23 ball bearing turbo.

but it is up and running now and on road test the A/F ratio is 14:1 at idle around 12`s on of boost and 10.s and 11.s on boost.
but.......
my boost comes in around 6k rpm and 6-8k rpm it pulls very well but after this its holds back with alot of poping on boost.
ill look into it at the weekend.... any ideas?

my pitoit tube is 8mm id with a 1x 4mm hole inside inlet.

i need to plumb up the boost gauge to see what boost its running think std impreza is around 6psi

also have added return fuel line and uprated fuel pump boost controlled fuel pressure regulator set at 3psi on idle.

the std zx9r carbs have (so ive been told by the previous owner) been dyno jetted.

if any one is woundering why the turbo is not in the engine bay its due to wanted a tubuler ex-manifold and theres no room for the turbo in the engine bay that side

Great work, just what i want my install to looklike
external turbo with no more bodywork hacking to make it as reversible as possible
look forward to any more updates

You probably could have been able to fit that little TD04 under the bodywork, I managed to squeeze a GT28RS in mine, well almost all of it fitted under the bodywork.

A bit of constructive feedback for you, hope it helps.

Fabricate a substantial bracket to hold up the weight of the turbo otherwise the manifold will crack very quickly with vibration, as it looks like its only made of normal thinwall exhaust tube.

You will need to change the carb jets as it will currently run far too lean under boost

The silencer you have will be very restrictive when under boost, it looks like you are reducing the pipework down from 3" to about 1 1/2" through a baffled can

If that car is road used, you may end up with local traffic cop having a lip on with that turbo.

Good effort, but If you can squeeze it under the bodywork as someone else has done , it's less obvious.

You might also want to add a brace to tie the plenum to the block at either end to stop it popping off.

Certainly makes for an 'in yer face' look !

Also as above, if that's a standard R1 can with a 90 degree tail it will need gutting, you want to keep the 3" tube all the way through, my R1 can has 3" perforated tube inside now so it does work Get it off ebay, not that expensive.

That was my first thoughts too I'm afraid.

You'll no-doubt get a few miles with smiles on it, but eventually a traffic cop is going to pull you over.

If you can't get the turbo inside the bodywork, then why not fabricate a bubble-type shield for it to sit under / behind?

PS - for what it's worth, I think that all mechanical parts should be exposed on every machine, but unfortunately the lawmakers disagree with me!

all kind of sorted, running 6psi of boost at moment, my fuel pressure is 2.5psi and 9psi on boost. its reving all the way through and my AFR is 14.7 on idle and 10.4 on boost through out the rev range and my EGT`s are arounf 400 deg.

BUT...... the clutch is slipping lol i did fit EBC springs but think i need to do more,lol.

if i race around it begins to hold back a bit just as it comes onto boost of witch i think is coil pack or spark plug related but yet to look into it......

when ive sorted this out ill try up the boost to 10psi may be 15psi

Good stuff, I'm a big fan of home brew stuff!

Time for a lockup clutch, that'll solve your slipping clutch issue.

just brought a barnett clutch kit..... were see how that copes ... fingers crossed!!
