What's the latest bike engine people are going for?
jonabonospen - 22/12/14 at 01:45 AM

So its been 2 years since I started my Mac#1 Worx ZX10R build and I just wondered 2 years on, what is the engine of choice for kits now?

Any kits now promoting anything other than CBR1000 Fireblade, ZX10R, Hayabusa, or R1 ?

Anyone starting to actively promote anything using ZZR1400, S1000RR, Aprilia RSVR Mille ?

Rosco86 - 22/12/14 at 06:47 AM

interesting topic, im building a bec, and i think im going for a zx10-r, not really sure why and if its the best choice though

daniel mason - 22/12/14 at 07:34 AM

On the road, the hayabusa has the best character. More torque, less revs etc.
As a track/race focused car the modern blade seems to be the best bet!
Although nearly all the top hillclimb guys and sprinters in the <1100 cc class use the gsxr 1000 as do jedi in their race cars. These are all mid engined though and in same orientation as the bike!

Iam to far into my build with a Hayabusa but I would love to have tried the engine out of my road bike, it's a Honda VFR1200, V4 layout and shaft drive already. The sports tourer version comes with 170BHP and loads of torque as standard.

It has the Honda variable valve timing so it's a mild mannered torquey engine until 6000rpm then all hell lets loose.

The bit I would love to have tried is the DCT gearbox it comes with which stands for duel clutch transmission which is a 6 speed flappy paddle gearbox with traction control all built in.

You can run it in three modes, full auto just press the gas and go, sports mode when it will hold onto the gear further up the rev range and finally full clutch less manual on two buttons. It even has an auto blip on the down shifts as standard.

Bit of a thread steal, but how do you find the VFR, toying with the idea of one myself. Currently on a triumph sprint st 1050. Keep goin back to triumphs triple as it's so torque and ideal for the road commute, fast in any gear and wheelies for fun. I like the ST as it's a sporty sports tourer, what would you class the vfr as?? I had a vfr800 vtec and really liked it, but it just didn't have the grunt of the triumph 1050 engine.

I have the crosstourer which is the adventure class like the BMW GS1200 but I have also driven the Sports tourer and the only thing stopping me getting it was it was more sports than tourer in the riding position.

But it was the first bike that has ever swayed me over to buying a Honda they truly are a great machine.

fesycresy - 22/12/14 at 08:56 AM

I went through the same dilemma, ended up choosing a duratec

I was going to use the ZZR1400, but if I had the cash for further engine work (i.e. turbo) I would stick with a Gen 2 'busa.

Autoflock Motorsport - 22/12/14 at 10:32 AM

very interesting thread, it was only yesterday a few friends and i were discussing this very topic, had a look at the zzr1400 engines and they have a lot of poke for the money, over 100ft lb and 200bhp i think and they can be had for under 2k which makes them a bit cheaper than the busa.

Honda vfr engine sounds very interesting too

Would be great to see one tried in a bec.

The extra room for big feet with no clutch pedal would be great!

Thinking about recent topics on bec's spinning around and damaging the engines due to them turning the starter in reverse, would this still be a problem with this set up?
With no clutch to pull in to cut the drive would it spin the starter backwards?

Is your car finished? Or still sat at Mac1?

jwhatley - 22/12/14 at 12:04 PM

Has anyone thought about an S1000RR engine yet?

I'd heard the issue was overcoming all the electrinics.

MK9R - 22/12/14 at 12:23 PM

And the price!

Yes unfortunately

OliilO - 22/12/14 at 01:32 PM

Sorry to hear that. What is it waiting for?

Just waiting for them to put the finishing touches to it really and get it in and through its test. Needs last of plumbing / cooling putting together now all parts are there, exhaust making, seats fitting, and then just setting up and thats about it really.

daniel mason - 22/12/14 at 05:21 PM

And a flatshifter!

I'm going for a zx10-r 2010 engine, I've tried to read up but can't seem to find much, it's for a road and track car, think I'm doing the right thing, from what I can work out a billet baffled sump will sort any oil problems,

It's a big ask, I know, but is there any possibility of you taking a reasonably accurate measurement of the overall width of that unit?

I can but not for 4 months, I am away at work just now

Sam_68 - 27/12/14 at 07:18 PM

OK, cool - thanks. I'll give you a prod in April, if I remember!

jacko - 27/12/14 at 09:51 PM

Would the car have to be left hand steering with that engine ? looking where the prop shaft comes of the box

I was thinking mid-engined, coupled directly to an offset differential, possibly?

And the gearbox is reportedly weak.

Some of the seadoo engines look good if you could get a gearbox to fit. A friend of mine has just sold his 250hp beast

Johneturbo - 7/2/15 at 09:49 AM

Have to say the ZZR14 is a stonking engine, if anyone was ever thinking of going for more cc

for me the R1 is a great engine but i kept having clutch issues fibres just woulnd't last after one launch they would end up in a few peices in the sump!

i've run the 14 with standard clutch and springs for over two years, and not had one issue, only needed to fit a billit sump the clutch slave cylinder doesn't needed to be modified like the busa?

i was lucky i got a great deal on a 0 miles crate engine from the states

skippad - 7/2/15 at 11:57 AM

I think i was one of the first to install 1400zzr in 2008. 12,000mls later, still superb, no clutch problems, fitted AB performance sump after installation, no oil surge probs....loads of usable power, torquey engine, very drivable in traffic and town as well!

knobby - 8/2/15 at 09:15 PM

I've just started a CBR1000RR build..

I believe they are pretty popular in RGB but I can't find many others running road going cars.
