R1 5VY choke question

Can anyone tell me how the auto choke works on the 5VY? Is it via the ECU? I always thought it was via water temperature and there were no electrics involved but after a chat with a mate im not too sure now?

Can anyone shed some light? Ive checked the parts microfiche but cant see anything to do with a physical choke?

Deffo a 5VY?

If so when you turn on the ignition the idle control valve(only carbs have a choke)You will see it do a self test

It will be controlled by ECU using water temp as it's a injection engine

5vy is injection not carbs so doesn't have a choke as such. Fast idle when cold is controlled by a waxstat on the side of the throttle bodies. Should have 2 small coolant pipes attached to it.

I don't think it is mate. The bottom left in that picture is exhaust side of the engine and I'm sure it should be the other side or the top of the picture somewhere as no coolant pipes run exhaust side at the top end.

I'm not sure any coolant goes to it,if it's not a idle control motor what is it?
As it's connected to the throttle butterflys.
The coolant temp sensor will be in the pipework somewhere,on the first injection R1 engine it's in the thermostat housing

It's a waxstat, as has been mentioned, two small rubber water pipes to it. It operates a pushrod connected to orifices at the bottom of the TB's. The ECU plays no part in things, other than to use the temperature signal for 'normal' mixture control.

It does seize, or had on one of the of engines in the past. Distilled water and a 50:50 glycol-inhibitor:water mixture pretty much essential in these engines.

Deffo not TPS,that's in the centre where cable attaches.
Looking at that part I thought it was is actually a secondary set of butterflies,which the ECU must control.

The waxstat is that small round silver thing with two pipes going to it in that pic

Bottom left is the ECU controlled secondary throttle servo in that picture. Nothing to do with choke/cold start. Basically overrides the primary throttles and stops it bogging down if you open throttle to fast.

The fast idle wax stat' is top centre with 2 piping connections.

Ahhhh perfect. So the waxstat expands and contracts with the heat of the coolant and in turn pushes or pulls a lever to add more fuel!

It adds more air, it's the ECUs job to add the extra fuel to go with it.
