Hi all,

In the letter informing me of my VIN it says that a franchised dealer or local garage must stamp the number on my chassis.
( one dent and he's a dead man )

As I'm the chassis manufacturer is this the case?

Or

Can I stamp the number on a plate, cut it into the chassis & weld, polish the weld off, then get the local garage to witness?


To be honest I don't see the point of either. The IVA inspector will see it and it will match the application forms and at least
he will know what he's looking at.


But if we must jump through hoops….. then we must.

Are you not your own franchised dealer as you built it yourself?

Even if the garage does do it you will need to stamp it onto a flat plate first and weld it to chassis, as stamping the box section will dent it for sure.
Just remember spot welded on plates are not accepted.

I etched mine myself using an electric etching tool, went through IVA and registration with no problems.
It's not particularly the neatest job either!

i stamped min onto a piece of 3mm steel and welded it to the chassis. mr vosa and dvla were both happy with it.

apparently vosa and dvla are all now the same agency so if mr vosa likes it then it should be fine.

I was thinking of drilling two 20mm holes and joining them up with a cutting disc to make a sort of oblong hole, with round ends.
Cutting the stamped plate to match and welding in flush. Clean off the weld build up and it will look like the original box.

Yeah, that's utter bollocks, I've never heard that before. Don't recall anything in the manual about it either, just make your own or etch into the chassis rail with a dremel.

From the letter I have it seems that a garage has to certify that the number you have been given has been stamped, etched or whatever into the chassis - not that they have to do it!

Its wording is - I/we confirm that the VIN .......has been stamped or permanently embossed on the chassis/ framework - and asks for signature and dealer stamp. (That's any garage/dealer). Its to be returned to Kits and Rebuilds at DVLA (Donna Kennett)

I think its just Donna trying to keep her records straight, no big issue, I don't see why we can't sort it and for the price of a stamp send it back to her - it also says in the earlier part of the letter "When you are ready to register the vehicle" so no big rush to get it done either

I engraved mine myself and welded it flush as you suggested by cutting out a piece and welding in a piece followed by grinding. IVA was no prob and on the way back from the IVA pass I stopped at a local independant garage and gave them 10 beer tokens to sign and stamp the DVLA letter.

I did try to register on there but didn't succeed. Must of had the wrong hat on.

I have same letter, I read it to mean they want a local garage to confirm VIN has been applied to car.

So did it myself with engraving tool, will get them to whitness it, when I go to have car checked on brake rollers etc prior to IVA

Don't forget that the number needs to be positioned on the right hand side of the chassis.

Government departments have their way of working and that's cast in stone.

Anyway, chassis is now stamped so that's one more job done.
