Finally got a response back from VOSA about what happens if I cannot prove the age of my engine (Toyota are useless and can't help).
If the age cannot be proven then they test it as a post 1997 engine. Well mine is a 1999, so even if I could prove the age I would be subject to the
same test.
Yep, the proof of age thing only really comes into play for those who want reduced emissions tests. My Mazda donor is a 92 car so although it has a cat, it should go through on reduced emissions. Which will make it easier when I come to forced induction!
