I'm thinking along the lines of Impreza... I'm told they are only around the 20kg mark and very reliable (this was from a Scooby-Fanboy
though!). Seem to have mountings that would lend themselves to a fairly easy mod.
Ok if you have all the bits to get the power to the wheels.. hubs driveshafts etc, modded or other wise...

I looked at a celica diff as they are torsen lsd (st205).
I would say a plus point is the lower stress they endure due to being 4wd, but might be made to lower spec. due to this.

Birkin, the South American Seven manufacturer uses Subaru differentials.
As an option at least.

I dunno, I think most of the jap stuff is made to withstand high power, think about all the tuned supras, scooby's and skylines out there, I know a guy running 800hp through standard supra transmission....
