Suggestions for power rack ?
CompoSimmonite - 10/2/14 at 12:00 PM

Due to loss of arm strength I want to convert my Marlin Roadster to power steering. Rather than going the normal power column route I'm considering a traditional power rack (with electric pump).
Anyone suggest a viable rack to consider as a replacement for the current Marina item ? Obviously tie rods can be shortened / ends rethreaded so basically I'm after a rack with the main body 20" wide with the pinion as close to the end as possible as clearance is a problem even with the manual version.

The Saxo/106 has a hydraulic rack with an electric pump. It uses drag links from a mid point though..

Space may be an issue as well..

Electric PAS column on the last Toyota Corrola is nice and compact, much smaller than the Corsa one. If you get one off a Corrola make sure you get the matching ECU mounted above it under the dash.

Saxo (or any other FWD) rack is unlikely to do as it would be geared the wrong way due to being mounted behind the hubs.

Would have to be from a RWD. The usual candidates would be come to mind, Seirra, 3 series or most likely, MX5?

ISTR the Marina had the track rod ends aft of the steering axis which gives a bigger choice, rover 25 would be my choice check the width between the inner ball ends on the Rover 25 rack.
I think the ball joint tapers should be able to be reamed out to take the Rover/Honda taper. Take the whole Rover 25 colum with the rack.

Why not a powered column? I would imagine it would be much easier to fit?

Could well be but I've erased them from my memory.

I have an electric powered rack from a Smart Roadster that I was going to be listing on eBay at some point.

Comes complete wih full column.

electric columns need a proper speed signal input to make them work properly .
