Mounting Brake Unions

Hi All

This is a question that's bugging me at the moment.

I want to secure my 3 and 4 way unions to the chassis by way of a rivnut, but I'm sure I read in one of the kit car magazines (typically an article I can't find!) of someone failing IVA because of this. I can't think why this would be a problem, but better to be safe than sorry.

So anybody been through IVA like this, or did you secure them another way?

I did not drill right through the tube so in effect did as you have said....

In an ideal world the chassis builder would attach brackets for attaching tee pieces

I'm sure someone on here said it failed because the union was insecure, ie either the bolt was not tight enough or the riv nut was loose in chassis, it didn't fail just because of using a riv nut.

if your worried weld a bolt onto chassis, then you can use a nylock nut on that

Ive used a rivnut, and plan to add coloured torque seal paint as a means of a visual queue to them being and remain ing secure. Should keep iva man happy.

I also read this somewhere (most likely on here) and the tester advised drilling all the way through the tube. I welded some tabs on mine to bolt to.

Thanks for all the replies, as all ways lots of useful information

Saw on the other thread, someone suggested riv studs. This sounds like a good option, nylock nut on top for Mr IVA and as long as its tight, no worries

I passed with a rivnut, it has locktight on it and doesn't move at all.

My IVA tester said that they wanted to be reassured that the bolt would not work loose. In the end, I drilled mine all of the way through and used bolts and nylocks, but I guess that rivnuts with thread lock would also suffice (include a photo of a bottle of thread lock next to one of the fixings as evidence). If thread lock is good enough for the brakes themselves then it should be good enough for the lines.
