Locating pin on the brake hose
Slimy38 - 24/10/20 at 11:28 AM

The MX5 brake hoses have a small pin at the end of the hose, I'm guessing it's to stop the union rotating on the caliper. Do I need to have that same pin on the new braided hoses?

And can anyone confirm whether an MX5 donor would use M10 x1 female bulkhead to 10mm banjo?

I currently have them sat in my Furore cart but I just wanted to double check before I click buy.

Afternoon mate

I haven’t used them on mine just braided hose straight to banjo fitting no issues that I can see

Providing the hose banjo is pulled up good & tight (might be worth investing in new stainless banjo bolts so you can pull them good & tight?) & as long as there is no interference to tug on the hose, which there shouldn't be anyway, then they are fine without the locating pin.

MX5 caliper is most definitely m10 x 1.0, whatever you put on the other end must match whatever you are connecting to it in copper, personally I prefer to have a male bulkhead on the flexy & use a female on the end of the copper pipe to mate to it, it's smaller, neater & lighter. Depends if you've already made your copper pipes up & don't want to change an end

If there was sufficient pull on the hose to turn a tightened down banjo then you have other issues to deal with first.

The pin is an assembly poke yoke because a banjo has an unconstrained degree of freedom (it can rotate around the bolt) as it's assembled (without the pin). It's not a torque reaction feature.

You won't find an aftermarket braided flexi kit with the alignment pegs, but it's probably assumed that you'd take sufficient care to align the unions correctly.

If you're buying MX5 length brake lines, yes, they are 10mm banjo to M10x1 double flare bulkhead connector with a retaining clip at the chassis end, but unless you're using MX5 subframes, I'd follow Russ' advice on the chassis end.
