Tip I was given recently is try the local fire service. They use them for practice.

Not much in the way of a roof to cut off an MX5

I took an old donor coupe on a trailer to my local metal recyclers in Petersfield last week - minus engine gearbox & rear axle - 700kgs = £16.50. plus £15ea for the 2 old CATs (so make sure you split them out).

So it really isnt worth their while collecting anymore, and can see why they would charge.

That was as pure scrap tin, rather than as a car disposal - I cut out the vin plates & retained the donor V5c for DVLA proof later

There is a local scrap yard type business called Silverlake who may collect it for you for a fee.

When scrapping several Sierra shells I was fortunate enough to have a Dad with trailers, men and towing vans to get them to the scrap dealers yards. Otherwise I may have resorted to cutting them up into bits I could move in a car.

One other consideration will be access to the vehicle to be collected - most scrappies will have a truck with a hiab type arm and want to grab the car and load it. Be sure they can get to it easily for collection.

I have used silverlake before but they will charge to collect now, I have no means of moving myself so it may cost me £50 to get rid

Do you have space and understanding neighbours to cut it up?

Could be easier than you think and a way of getting it into moveable chunks.

Chopped my old Mk1 Escort up at the time it wasnt worth anything... took it in pieces in the back of an estate to the tip. Easier job than you think.

Having seen Sierras devoid of parts I'd agree, chopping them up can't be too much effort.

Well my neighbours can be louder than most grinders they have lots of energy not getting up to go to work ( sorry little dig ) yea I think I will chop it up I have a big grinder

Didn't think of that!

Tell me about the price of scrap - 6 car batteries (don't ask!) = 80kg and four solid discs netted me £30 last week.....
Can you not sell the body parts on fleabay or MX%Nutz?
Cheers, Pewe10

ask your local garage most will have someone that collects scrap from them, you wont get anything for it, but they will take it away, thats what i did

Slimy38 - 8/2/16 at 04:55 PM

It took me a while to find someone who would just take a stripped 5 away for free. I might have got £50 for a running car that they can strip for parts, but as soon as I said bare chassis it was a struggle. I even said that it had been properly stripped and decontaminated, but they still didn't want it.

You may have tried them, but these guys may help you out...

There's an MX5 specialist in Portsmouth. They may be willing to take it off your hands?

I recently got rid of an MX5 shell by finding one of those "aaaaaannnyyyy olllllll' iiiirroooonnn" scrap guys with a truck that could carry the shell. Took 3 of us and an engine crane but we loaded it on to the back, told him he could keep whatever the scrap yard gave for it which his eyes lit up at and was more than willing to help. He only got about 12 quid for it in the end but didn't cost me a penny
