Hi All,
Just had my faithfull steel MTB frame shot blasted and powder coated in White. It looks stunning and I'm now rebuilding the bike. It has a
number of M4 threaded bosses for things like water bottle holders and racks. To close the threaded holes off from the elements I'd like to fit
M4 x 8 mm Aluminium socket cap set screws - ideally anodised Black. I've searched the web, including eBay, but what I can find seems pricey to
buy.
Can anyone point me towards a source of parts at sensible prices?
Happy to purchase online and get them delivered to me as well.
Thanks,
Nick
Stainless instead of aluminum?
M4 GWR Colourfast® Cap Head Screws - A2 Stainless Steel - Coloured Socket Bolts
Thanks for the link - being a fussy bugger the Aluminium ones are a lot lighter that stainless steel ones
How about some funky rainbow coloured M4 Titanium fasteners?

again, titanium, I found these from china

else get some threaded ali bar and cut a screwdriver slot.
Why aluminium?
Unless you can exclude all damage to the anodising (which will be very difficult with a hard coating on a soft metal), you'll suffer from
galvanic corrosion. Small reactive metal in large frame of less reactive metal (ali screw in steel) gives a very high rate of reaction.
I'm not a cyclist, but i assume a steel bike is heavier than an aluminium bike (or others), so shaving off a few grams seems insignificant.
ProBolt sell them, if you have deep pockets.
Check they are actually M4... I've never seen anything other than M5 for bottle cage bolts, that's all (M5 bolt is 4mm allen key head if
it's a cap screw).
I sell them at work: http://www.tartybikes.co.uk/aluminium_bolts/c522.html
go for plastic m4 bolts if your chasing 0.01 of a gram
you need some 'silicon tidds'
made for this exact purpose!
Having worked on the bike this arvo you could be right with M5 after all...might make them easier to find.
Just been out and checked and yes they're M5 bolts!
Good to know and the tarty bikes site looks good as well.
Thanks,
Nick
