Wheel nut runner
johnH20 - 9/12/16 at 11:20 AM

I seem to spend a lot of time taking my wheels on and off for various reasons - a recent example being the balls aching process of rear toe adjustment. So for Xmas I promised to give myself a nut runner, not really worried about inbuilt torque control as I always use a torque wrench as a final check on tightness. Any suggestions on a specific tool or is it simply a case of getting a socket attachment for a cordless drill?

I bought one of the bundled impact drivers,. really low cost in my case as it used the batteries that I had in common with all the drill drivers I had. The advantage of the impact driver is that it undoes the tight nuts without resorting to another tool.

If you have a cordless drill then a socket attachment should do the job (it would for me).

As per Nick ^^^

Ive used my cordless drill for the spinning on and off the wheel nuts, but use a torque wrench to loosen and tighten the last bit

I use a cut down "caravan leg" socket/adapter in the drill, think its 19mm, but might be 17mm

Unless, I was doing it 5 days a week, I wouldn't buy a purpose built unit to do the job

agreed ^^^ but the OP has promised himself one for xmas who are we to dissuade him ?

I have a dewalt as it uses the batteries from the drill drivers, a real no brainer. Once I had the impact driver in my hands it was really easy to find hundreds of other jobs that I could use it for.

As the others I use my battery drill with a socket extension of which a I cut off the female end.

cut the female end off a 3/8" ratchet extension bar and stick it in your cordless drill...

I use one of these and a cheap battery drilly driver for winding the legs up and down on my caravan.

Re-reading the OPs question and the thread made me think. I've always lived with using either a socket on an extension bar or just my fingers TBH. Can't say I've ever been in that much of a hurry (or in need of an F1 pit stop).
