Painting over chrome

Why would you want to paint over chrome you might ask. The reason is that one of the door hinges on my MGTC for some reason has been chromed. Period correct is to have them in body colour, and they stick out from the body so they are noticeable.

Is it possible to simply rough the surface with sandpaper and then spray over with etch primer, or will this not stick well enough. What are my other options? I've had a go at sanding it all the way off and its not easy (plus the dust probably isn't very good for me).

You can get chrome plating stripped, a quick search shows a few companies in the Nottingham area.

I guess if you can give a good key, paint may hold if a decent etch primer is used.

My previous attempts to paint chromed parts haven't been successful. I think I'd have the part stripped of chrome first and then paint it. Be a real shame to paint it then have to have it stripped and do it over again.

I know, for one hinge it just seemed a little excessive to take it to a specialist company so I was looking for a DIY approach that's not going to kill me.

I've painted the chrome trim on my Saab with plastikote, I think with a bit of encouragement it might peel off again but for the moment it's done a good job.

Ive done it before, lightl key with some fine, but not invisible wet an dry and it will take without killing you

I think I'll have a go at keying it with fine sandpaper and then spraying it with etch primer. They are only bolt on items, so easy to get off if it doesn't work, in which case I'll go to a chroming company. By the time that I've spotted that etch primer is not working well enough, I'll probably have other things to have rechromed, so I'll just add the hinge to the pile.
